5.0 out of 5 stars. Fantastic Jacket

This is a really nice, warm down jacket that doesn't feel thin like a lot of light down jackets feel. It has a lot of fill in it, which makes it slightly heavier than the super lightweight jackets, but the amount of fill is significantly higher. This makes it much warmer feeling. I haven't gotten a chance to put the water resistant down to the hose test, but if it works like it should, that helps a lot making me feel safe using it in damp conditions. It also has a few nice details like an adjustable hood, and thumb holes in the sleeve to help keep your hands a bit warmer. I found the fit a bit form fitting. Usually I'm a large or borderline x-large and I got this in an x-large which fit nicely. All in all, great jacket that will serve well for colder backpacking trips.

  • 2.0 out of 5 stars. Third pitch is not a home run.

The jacket is warm overall except for the back. It feels like it has about half the insulation as the rest of the coat. After wearing it a few mins. you feel this coolness on your back. Unequal warmth. I expected more from a jacket that list for over 400 dollars. It's also fits a little tight around the mid section but great in the shoulders. I have four other down jackets I'm comparing it too.

Warm, light, waterproof, possibly bombproof. Always good to have a down jacket with a hood!
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars. Hooded down jacket for backpacking - good value

I am looking for a hooded jacket to be used for fall backpacking. I found five candidates weighing roughly 10-13 ounces and selling for $150 to $300. Regarding warmth, this one is in the middle of the range and STP sells it at a bargain price. It has a very warm adjustable hood with a brim and a straight cut through the body. For the cost, the Third Pitch is hard to beat unless it is not warm enough as was the case for me. Most of the jackets at this weight are "see through" if you hold them up to the light and the down fill is sparse and very soft/squishy. If you seek more warmth take a look at m**l box construction or c**x 970 fill.

I was shipped a BA Meaden rather than the Third Pitch I ordered.
The Meaden is great - light warm and packable.
I wish I could comment on the Third Pitch. ..
