I typically wear a small or medium, and chose the medium for these shorts. They are a little big, but the drawstring does a fantastic job of cinching the waist. I wore these for the first time in a Half Marathon (usually that is not a good idea but, hey, I was excited!) and they were wonderful! I got slight case of road rash, but it was extremely humid. Luckily these shorts are light and did not get water logged. I would buy another pair if they had more colors of the "Love Running" design!
