I would have to say I bought the XL and it fit well.... Might have gone one size larger but I like my layers a bit loose. It done not constrict at all but fits close which a layer should good movement just saying the on a very cold morning this would be your true base layer. When it's that cold -3 to 10 degrees I like to wear a thin under layer under the base layer. Then a medium base over that.

It's helped keep me comfortable in temps from 40s down to minus teens. I like to wear it with a very thin base layer underneath. If it's too warm for 2 layers you'll get hot in this shirt because it doesn't seem to wick away sweat very well by itself. I'm 5'11" 185 lbs and the large fits well (roomy but not too loose).

Typical for my build. Ordered a M for my 40" chest, and fit like a glove, nice and trim/tapered—with exception of the neck. As a base layer, I'd expect everything to fit snug, but not tight or constrictive. That's true in every respect except the neck, which measured a full 22 inches! Who has a 22 inch neck?
Pains me to send this back, because I love everything else about this base layer. -
