I'm very pleased with this stove so far. I have over 40 years experience backpacking, beginning with the Svea 123 and later the MSR 9a stove. Since those days, I've used every MSR stove made as well as numerous stoves of other brands. My current favorite stoves are the Brunton Vapor AF and the MSR R... Read More

Not happy with this stove, can't keep running. First few uses were great. The flame spreader is easily lost.I would really like to return.

First one I got didn't work and dangerously sprayed pressurized fuel everywhere through the pump, that's why I give it 4 stars. Sierra Trading Post quickly exchanged it and so my review is based on the working model I have now. This is a great stove. It's very easy to pressurize, very easy to light, and I love that I don't have to fumble with any jets when I switch fuels. Mainly have tested with Coleman Premium Fuel, and I'm very impressed with how little fuel it uses. I've had close to an hour of burn time and have only used maybe an ounce or two of fuel. Great simmer control. The instructions included are not very good, thank goodness for YouTube and Google search.

I had great hopes for this stove, due to the reputation of the manufacturer and the "Made in Japan" logo. Instead, it turned out to be a disappointment right out of the box.

The pump seems to be a low quality assembly. The o-ring on the pump lid fails to seal the fuel bottle properly, because it is not the right size and density (too soft) and the groove in which it sits appears to be too wide and not deep enough. The result is loss of pressure in the fuel bottle, regardless of how tight the pump is screwed into the bottle.

It also appears that the lid is not perfectly perpendicular to the pump body either, magnifying the leaking problem. This could be a mold (manufacturing or design) defect in the body of the pump or a production quality issue.

I am not sure if all the units exhibit the same problem. Other STP customers have not reported this type of defect, but I found confirmation on other web product reviews. Brunton discontinued its entire line of similar products in 2010.

One could check for this problem without adding fuel in the bottle. Visually inspect the pump assembly, screw in the bottle then just pump air and immerse it in water to check for leaks. Mine were perfectly audible, even before the water test.

Obviously, I have not started the stove. Perhaps a different size o-ring could solve the problem, but I considered the risk associated with uncontrollably leaking fuel out of the bottle (with the stove either on or off) to be too great to justify using it. Will return it for a full refund, knowing from experience that STP's customer service is the best out there. (July 9, 2012)

I was shopping for a liquid fuel stove and stumbled across this gem. Great little stove that comes with everything you need (except fuel of course), parts kit, fuel bottle, storage sack and cleaning tool are all in the box. You can fire up this stove using white gas, unleaded, kerosene and even butane canisters, all without changing the jet.
