3.0 out of 5 stars. defective assemblyReviewed by kenn from Northeast USA on Sunday, December 17, 2017One of the adjustable shoulder straps was assempled with a twist in it. The pack is usuable but uncommon for Camelbak to have a defect like that. To correct it, have to remove the stitching at the end of the strap in order to feed through the adjustment buckle then assemble correctly and restitch the end. Disappointing. Also, dislike there is no key lanyard attachment in any of the zippered compartments.
Nonetheless, I can see this being my favorite lightweight day pack because of the load bearing waist belt with zip pockets on both sides (wonder why more packs are not designed like that) and the large main single compartment rather than make my gear fit into smaller separate compartments. I like there is no rigid panels makes it ideal if traveling, it campacts easily to put inside regular luggage. Also there are two large stretch mesh pockets on the front of the pack not readlily noticeable that isn't mentioned in any information I've seen. As an example of the size, a 16 oz. Naglene bottle fits perfect and securely.
The three star rating is for the dective assembly. -
5.0 out of 5 stars. My new go-to pack!Reviewed by El Barracuda from Vegas and Vallarta on Monday, August 7, 2017First, I am a backpack guy. I carry a few regular EDC things with me but I don't carry weapons nor do I like military looking EDC packs. I much prefer lighter carry options that fit well and stay in place because I'm an active person. I also need a lot of functions and options for organizing my stuff. I don't even use the hydration bladders but have several of them in my closet. I'm a water bottle person for sure though. Anyway, this 18X is the best backpack I own now for regular every day use. It is so incredibly light, comfy, and functional. It also looks really good. I usually don't care for waist straps and tend to avoid packs that have them or that don't allow me to remove them. I took a shot with this one though and I was right. The waist strap is really well designed. It doesn't have strap keepers but I added a couple from another pack so its fine now. Its a nice waist strap that is wider than the usual ones and it looks and wears beautifully on the body. I love the zip out option for additional space here, too. I was out and given a honey-do shopping list on my way home yesterday. I grabbed about 5 pounds of various things from the grocery store. All fit really well including a long baguette that did stick out the top a little. Anyway, piece of cake with this Octane 18X. Its about a 1/2 mile hike from the store to my house and it was around 90 degrees but I made it easily and comfortably thanks to this pack. Highly recommend!

2.0 out of 5 stars. A shell of previous 18xReviewed by powern@p from Oregon on Friday, December 30, 2016I have an Octane 18x from about five years ago and it was made like a quality backpack, only smaller. It had padding, heavy cordura-type material on the bottom, and most importantly, a compression pouch inside the main compartment to put my bike tools, pump and spare tube. That interior pocket kept all that heavy stuff from flopping around while biking. Also, there were multiple webbing loops I could use to hang my tail light as I ride to trail heads at night...
This new one, which I also received as a gift, has all light-weight material, almost no padding compared to the old one, and most importantly, no inside compression pocket. I don't understand this unless they just had to do away with that feature because all the rest of the pack is so flimsy it would have caused the pack to scrunch up against the user's back.
The only positive I see in the new design is the weight savings. But honestly I don't carry an over-sized Camelbak on my mountain bike rides and day hikes to save weight. I use it because it carries my gear the way I want it carried -- with flexibility. Not sure if this new one is going to work.
