Here is how I get the best fit of these shoe trees:
With two fingers I push on the back of the shoe-tree front - the front slides into the shoe as far as it can go.
Then I push in the back wooden part - the front opens to fill the shoe.
If you push the tree into the shoe holding the back wooden pa... Read More

I once was told to not pinch pennies on those things that connect you with the ground. Things like tires, mattresses, desk chairs and--especially--shoes. Taking care of a fine pair of shoes is much better than buying cheap stuff every year. As you're probably aware, cedar shoe trees help shape the shoe, stretching the leather and help keep the leather dry. Moisture, especially from sweat, is a huge factor in quality shoes breaking down. These go a long way to preventing that. Pair it with regular cleaning and conditioner and you should have years, if not decades, out of your quality footwear. These are every bit as good as shoe trees 2-3x the price.

I discovered these shoe trees after I had purchased a pair of Red Wing Iron Rangers seconds from Sierra. I knew this was an accessory I needed to help he longevity of my new boots and when I discovered Sierra had these from Woodlore I decided to give them a shot since the boots turned out so wonderfully. I had always heard Woodlore made quality shoe trees and at the price that Sierra was offering was just too good to pass on. I was not disappointed. They had a strong scent of cedar and fit exactly as into my boots as needed. I can tell they are quality and will serve me for years to come. I cannot tell why these are seconds but I can tell they are worth the reputation and a great deal to take advantage of here at Sierra.

Very sturdy shoe tree. I am a 'gym rat' and put these in my shoes after each workout -- have greatly extended the shoe life. My gym shoes are dry and fresh the next day. Would recommend lightly sanding them occasionally. Have to disagree with other raters who say that the mechanism is not good quality. I have had many shoe trees from several different manufacturers -- they all have 'spring' problems and will eventually wear out if you are not careful with them. Take your time placing them in your shoes. I also like the big heel on these shoe trees versus the 'rinky dinky' heel on most others. For this price they are a steal.

This is the first pair of shoe trees I've ever purchased, so really can't judge as to how nice they are, but they seem to do what they're supposed to do. They fit in my shoes perfectly and smell refreshing. Great product for the price!

    • Answer Yes.
Answered on 9/21/2016 5:56:14 AM by Mr. Philadelphia from Philly
    • Answer Yes it is. When I use them, I push the toe-piece in as far as it will go. Then i push the heel-piece into position which spreads the toe-piece apart and fills the shoe. Its not as fancy as one you'd get from Allen Edmonds, but it works fine.
Answered on 9/21/2016 8:09:00 AM by The Rising Wind from Up around the bend.
    • Answer Yes, the toe piece is adjustable.
Answered on 9/21/2016 8:11:19 AM by Product Specialist Greg from Sierra Trading Post
    • Answer The toe piece adjusts itself to the proper width when the heel is pushed into the shoe. You are not able to set a width and then put it in the shoe.

I second Every Man Jack's Comment about how to use them.

    • Answer The toe piece is split but does not appear to be adjustable. I have a medium width foot and the toe piece fits well for that size.

  • Question “What size would accommodate 10.5 M and 10.5 N?”

    • Answer Large
Answered on 2/15/2016 1:51:12 PM by ManMan from SoCal
    • Answer Get the Large. I wear a 10.5 M and bought the large - works perfectly. The toe end widens as it goes in, so it should fit in the 10.5 N as well, and just not widen out as much. But if not the case, STP has a good return policy, although I doubt you'll need to exercise it.

    • Answer I wear a 10 medium and use the large. The large fits in some shoes very well and in others it fits tightly. I would think that the large would fit in the 10 1/2 medium, but I can't predict how it would fit in a narrow. It would likely fit but may be tight.

    • Answer I would recommend large. You will greatly appreciate the cedar shoe trees. Not only do they keep the shoe stretched in perfect position but the cedar seems to absorb moisture and perspiration. Quick and easy to use. Could not determine why marked as seconds? And of course STP is priced right.

    • Answer I purchased 6 pair of xxl mens size. They were perfect. I did not detect any problems.

    • Answer Hello Carl, In my experience "2nds" have always been defined as a new item that may have a minor flaw. In the case of the Shoe Tree you are interested in the "2nds" aspect doesn't appear to be note worthy. The product arrived beautifully packaged and in pristine condition. Cedarbrooke has made a fine quality item that I can highly recommend. In my opinion these items were more than likely overstocked and not really "2nds". Good luck finding a better shoe tree.

    • Answer They are definitely brand new. We've purchased 8 or10 sets of them for my husband's good shoes. Each pr of these shoe trees arrives individually boxed with no signs that the boxes were ever opened. The shoes trees we've received from STP have certainly never been used. I don't know what makes them 2nds. They work correctly and protect his shoes from the damage that leather suffers without the cedar absorbing the moisture as it stretches the leather back into place. No problems using them.

    • Answer The shoe trees which I received were new. If they were seconds, I did not notice a flaw. They worked as intended and had a strong cedar odor implying that they had not aged significantly since machining.

    • Answer These are brand new shoe trees. Seconds means there is a defect that prevents the manufacturer from selling as pristine condition. I must admit I saw absolutely nothing I would consider as a defect on the shoe trees I purchased. I intend to buy more.

    • Answer the ones i received were brand new
'2nds' are pieces that have (typically minor) imperfections, but i can't find anything wrong with the ones i got.
Answered on 10/13/2014 9:18:44 AM by anonymous coward from la area
    • Answer Carl:
They are brand new. When an item is listed as a 2nd it means it did not meet the manufacturer's highest quality standards. In many cases it was rejected for a minor flaw, often an imperceptible one. The manufacturer will sell its seconds outside its normal distribution channels. If the manufacturer leaves its brand on its 2nds it will insist the retailers sell them as 2nds. Also, if the brand is left on it is usually, though not always by any means, a pretty good indication that any flaw is a minor one.

! have 25 or so pairs of these shoe trees I ordered from STP. I am well satisfied with them and have no complaints whatsoever. I have yet to find the flaws that caused them to be sold as 2nds. Whatever they are they have not interfered with their functions.

    • Answer These shoe trees came packaged as brand new. There was no indication that they had even been opened from their original packaging. They are labeled as "2nds" probably from a quality assurance standpoint, but I haven't been able to detect any defects, either visually or functionally.
