I walk with my dog 4 miles every day, so I need durable, supportive footwear. Usually I wear hiking boots, but my feet get so hot during the summer. So I decided to try a pair of trail runners.
One reason I had been reluctant to buy trail shoes in the past was that most of them come in garish, neon colors that look ridiculous. But these Kaibab shoes are a nice shade of chocolate brown, with subtle purple accents. I don't feel embarrassed to wear them.
I ordered my usual size, 6, and they fit like a glove right out of the box. I do wish they had slightly more length in the toe, but they aren't so tight that they create pressure. I think if I had ordered a half-size up, they would have felt too big.
I was amazed at how light these felt on my feet. It was almost like I wasn't wearing shoes at all, and it made me want to dance! They also keep my feet cool, even when the temperature is in the 90s. However, if the weather is rainy I would wear boots; these are not intended to be waterproof.
Despite their light weight, these shoes are well-constructed and supportive. I have bony feet, and usually when I buy a pair of boots, I automatically put a cushioned orthotic insert in the heel (on top of the factory-made insole). But with these shoes, I felt like I could get by without the additional padding.
In fact, they are designed so that you can feel the ground. The sole is very flexible (without being flimsy), which gives me a more natural gait and allows me to walk faster. Already, I can tell that this is strengthening my feet. My plantar fasciitis has disappeared.
I cannot recommend these shoes highly enough. They are exactly what I needed, and I know I'll be wearing them all summer for walking the dog. They'll also be perfect for travel.
