Bought this to go over my daughter's icebreaker 260 base layer. She doesn't like wearing a lot of heavy stuff and is sensitive to the cold. There is no doubt that it makes a nice difference. I think they say the omni heat increases retention of heat by 20%, which sounds just about right. So in my opinion it is a great light weight enhancement to other products. She used to have to wear a super heavy angora/wool sweater over her icebreaker. Now, a light fleece shirt over the omin-heat with the base layer underneath seems to keep her perfectly comfortable. Throw a down coat over that and the subzero temps outside don't bother her, plus she's much more comfortable outside without the super heavy layers. I've also bought a pair of omni-heat bugaboo interchange gloves for my older daughter, who goes out in the cold a lot. In spite of buying other nice gloves for her in the past, none have kept her hands satisfactorily warm. She loves these gloves because they keep her hands warmer than any other gloves she's ever worn - she is finally comfortable.
I will say that the natural material of the merino is far better against the skin than the omni heat shirt, so I would definitely use it as a second layer on top of the merino. I personally wouldn't like to wear the omni heat directly against the skin.

Getting ready for trip to Iceland and need limited items. Have had good experience with Columbia kids things in past. size 2 fits my 2 year old well. It is true to size and thinner side of mid weight (perfect for what I want). I got the black and my 2 year old girl was delighted that the inside had silver stars! (the omni-heat i assume). I'm rating high- but I do admit I have not yet tried the wash/wear and tear aspect.
