So, the question is, "When would these shorts be a good idea?" Answer: If you wear these purely for outdoor activities, walk everywhere you go and never sit down. Other acceptable answers include: You don't care about your furniture or vehicle. Zippered pockets everywhere might sound like a good idea, however, the zippers on these shorts don't get along well with wooden furniture or fabrics that could snag. I've found that the rear pocket zippers will dig into whatever you sit on - potentially leading to some ugly marks on wooden chairs, etc. Also, not a fan of sitting in leather car seats with these either, as they scrape. Oh, and when you put your hands in the front pockets, the zippers can attack those too or your watch...you get the idea. To add insult to injury, I found that they were quite large in the waist as well and I needed a belt - otherwise they would fall down.

I purchased these before a long trip, where I needed to pack light but have clothes for multiple climates. These were my one pair of shorts for the trip and they worked well. Light-weight, easy wash & dry, and comfortable. I also like the zip side pockets which created a better sense of security, since I was in some places where pick-pockets are a problem. You might want to order one size smaller; since mine seemed large.

Gave 2 pairs to my husband as gifts. He loves them! Terrific on hot days. Launder well.

I am used to an excellent fit and well designed clothes from Columbia. These shorts did not seem to meeet these high standards. The cut is off in the crotch and the waist band seems flimsy.

Good shorts

Light weight and pack well, look good and dry quickly. Most of all very comfortable. Love the look and feel.

Can't use other Columbia shorts to predict the size to order of these. Order one size larger and you will be happy.

I like the shorts. Nothing flashy and they are functional. Also like that they were not made in China. Not the USA, but tis an imperfect world.

The fit is spot on and they look as good as they feel. They will be great for travel as they dry quickly, look good and pack well.

Wear it on the boat. Dries quickly. Light and cool.
