I thought this sweater would be a good thing in the age of hot flashes, warm for the time I'm freezing, and handy for those intervening moments when being able to whip off your sweater and have bare arms is a life-saver. Perhaps I bought the wrong size; the Large isn't tight enough at my waist (I'm a size 12) to keep me really warm when I'm cold. But then also, when I need to cool off quickly, the big cowl is still sitting against my neck, impeding cooling down.
OK, now you know more about me than you ever wanted, sorry.
The cowl is really flattering: it isn't one of those super-floppy ones but really creates a frame around your face. It can be folded over once or twice to alter the size of the frame (and how well it fits in a coat). With a cardigan over it, it looks smashing. I'm tall (5'10") so really appreciate that it is a longish length. That said, it is a boxy fit, and if it fits at the hip, it won't be warm at the waist where it is needed to keep you warm. The sweater is a lighter weight knit than the cowl.
The fabric is not cloud soft - in my experience cashmere is just a tad itchy. I love it, but there it is.
