These are very roomy in their fit, which is good for hiking/backpacking. However, I'll have to alter the waist in order to get them to stay up. The legs are loose fitting too, but that will be OK since many pants are too tight on my thighs. A smaller size would be too small. It's comfortable fabric - time will tell how durable it is.

I wear either a 10 or a 12 so it's hard to know what size to order. I looked at the size chart and by that I needed a 12. The pants were too big in the waist. I could take them off with them zipped and buttoned! They were a bit too long for me but since I am 5'3 that is expected with pants that aren't a petite. I liked them but had to return them.

you could hem them, but it is a nylon material so it may not handle it well

I would think they can be hemmed easily because the bottoms don't have zippers or snaps that most convertible pants do. But keep in mind where the convertible zipper will be if you are short; it may be too long and hit at your knee or lower.
