These boots felt comfortable the fist time I wore them. I went for a short hike and didn't experience any break-in issues. I went for a longer day hike in treacherous muddy, water conditions and the boots held up beautifully. Amazingly waterproof, great traction and oh so comfortable.

These boots are incredibly comfortable even right out of the box. They feel like a sort of tennis shoe/hiking boot hybrid (fitting, as New Balance owns the Dunham name): The main body of the shoe is lightweight and breathes, and the footbed is very well padded, yet the ankle is thickly padded and supportive and the sole and tread feel substantial. I suponate rather than pronating, so I require a lot of cushioning in the footbed, and I'm always looking for hiking boots with adequate ankle support that don't rub my ankles painfully. These boots satisfy both requirements. I haven't tried them out for seriously long-distance hiking, rugged trails, or in inclement weather, but they would work beautifully for day hikes and light packing. A note on fitting-- Depending on the style and manufacturer of the shoe, I wear 9 1/2s (flats/heels), 10s (casual shoes and boots), and 11s (running shoes). I ordered these in a size 11 and they fit very well, with about half an inch at the end of the toe box and no rubbing on the heels.

Great boot for great price, serves my wife well as her first pair of waterproof boots for hiking. We're beginning to do some multi-day backpacking and these boots will provide a good starting place for her.

Following up on my previous reviews-- i wore these over the summer and fall on probably 10-12 hikes or so, totaling about 100 miles i'd guess. And the sole looks OK but I just noticed that some of the stitching is coming loose and the plastic toe cap/protector is torn on one shoe, and both have begun to detach from the toe-are fabric uppers. I guess i've figured out why they're so cheap... too bad. They should last more than one season eh.

I have bought Dunham footwear before and it ran a little small so I bought a size larger than usual and they fit beautifully with heavy hiking socks. They are sturdy enough for light backpacking yet light enough for everyday.
