They block the wind on your front while breathing easily through the arms and back. This is a lower quality cycling vest. The fit is baggy, not contoured and aerodynamic like you find on better quality vests. Most importantly, the zipper is mediocre quality and snags too easily when opening or closing. I like to unzip a little when climbing steep hills, but I can't do that with this vest since it too often snags when zipping while riding (with one hand on the handlebars).

I wear it while playing tennis, going on a run, bike rides and coaching soccer. It would be great if it had pockets but I'm not complaining. But that's the only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. It breathes well and has a mesh back. I normally wear size medium in just about everything but since this is a vest I ordered a size small since there are no arm/shoulder restrictions. Fit is true to size.

I ride on some scary roads so I always wear hi-viz even in the summer. This vest fits well and the mesh back keeps me from melting. I am very pleased with the purchase.
