I have used the GoLite Gust for short, week-long trips as well as camping and backpacking. It's nice and light. The main top-loading compartment is cavernous. It's like one big stuff sack. There is a good sized outer compartment as well for things like maps, snacks, etc. The durability of the material makes it good for airline travel and some rough handling. There are not too many straps to stabilize the load and the padding is lacking; so this pack is not ideal for backpacking. I would carry up to 25 lbs. as a maximum load; otherwise, the pack/load would ride weird on my back. I sprayed my pack with a silicone spray to make it water resistant. Though, there is no lid so it still needs a little cover (or you can roll the top if it's not stuffed full) when it's wet.

To make the best use of this backpack you have to know how to pack it properly and distribute the weight evenly. I'm still in the learning process but like the fact that I have enough space to pack what I need and still keep it light. Right now I carry about 20 pounds. I know I can do better but I'm a novice at this. There are plenty of good web sites with helpful information on packing light. By the way, I'm 5 ft 1 and 116 pounds and I bought a medium pack. I might have been able to buy the small.

This has been my primary pack for several years. Hiked the Muir Trail non-stop in eleven days last year (2007) using this pack. Use your sleeping pad (z-rest) for a stiffener and back padding. Can haul a lot of stuff with this pack, but best to keep pack weight to below 30 lbs. and 20 lbs. is even better. An excellent intro to lessening your carried weight; too bad GoLite discontinued this pack as it's become a bit of a classic. Zipper pocket on back seems a bit weak, though mine has not blown out yet.

Hey, how hard could it be to pack if you've only got one main compartment plus another pocket that is only slightly larger than a map pocket? Plenty of room for lots of lightweight bulky items. This pack is perfect for a disorganized minimalist.

I have not used it and thus am not able to review it at this time. At this juncture it "looks" good. It is basically a plain sack! It is 1 huge open compartment so my concerns about volume are satisfied. The padding is thin so I guess low total weight and excellent packing technique will be critical for comfort!

Holds a lot of stuff, fairly sturdy,no frame but I use a folding mattress to give support, good for up to 30 pounds of gear, maybe 35.
