I can't yet speak to how warm these are in really cold weather because I didn't purchase them 'till the end of winter. I've only used them for riding a bicycle in temps in the low 30's and they did keep my hands warm without overheating at those temperatures. Note that the mfg rates these as a level below their warmest. They appear to be well put together and hopefully, the palm-side will wear well, but again, I haven't used them enough to judge durability. I chose these mittens principally for the long cuff which extends a couple of inches beyond the wrist bone. These don't have a knit cuff which I would prefer to close them off to the cold, but they do have elastic around half the wrist circumference plus a strap which can be snugged up. The inside of the cuff is poly fleece and the lining of the mitten is a smooth knit. There is a zipper to allow a heat pack to be slipped into the back of the mitten which would be a nice feature for frigid temperatures, though I personally hate to use throw-away items. There are a couple of problems with these mittens. One is sizing - and perhaps this is on Sierra Trading Post. According to their sizing chart, I should have purchased a Men's small for my 8" hand. I was skeptical given my typical size so I ordered a size large. That size fit snugly in girth and length and I like a little space for warmth and comfort so I had to return them and order an extra large which meant paying for shipping three times! (So much for inexpensive mittens.) Also, while the external face grips well, the interior liner is independent of the outside and slips around when trying to grip so I wouldn't recommend these for skiing or any other activity that requires you to hold on tightly to something like a ski pole. I'd say these are best for hiking, watching sports, etc.
