I live in the Pacific Northwest and always carry these with me when I hike/camp/backpack. For nights when I'm extra cold, I throw a couple of these in my sleeping bag. They not only pre-warm my bag, but when I climb in, I push them down to the foot part and they keep my toes toasty. I sleep much better with warm feet!

So many uses when you otherwise don't mind getting outside in the cold. Keeping your hands warm can be so important with having fun outside. These work great. Often last longer than the specified time, because that will depend on how much oxygen they get to react with. Works great, every time we use them. Can't beat the best price around. When they go on sale, bug more than you thought you needed. They can last a long time in storage. I had some that sat unopened for 4-5 years and still worked great.

Made in China, which makes me unhappy. I have ordered many, many of these from STP, and have never had any from the U.S.. The price is pretty good, and they usually last all day.

Asked on 1/27/2011 12:00:00 AM by sjkrup from Unknown
    • Answer These warmers cannot be reused.
Answered on 1/31/2011 12:00:00 AM by Customer Care from Sierra Trading Post
    • Answer Grabber actually sells a new version with a little ziploc bag for this purpose. Works only so-so.||The heat is produced through oxidation of the contents so when you seal them up and exclude oxygen you can slow down and stop the process. When you reopen the bag, the process continues. Unfortunately ziploc bags are not necessarily air tight so sometimes a second use will not work well, especially if they have been sitting for a while because oxygen slowly leaked in.

  • Question “What is being oxidized to create the heat? Does the oxidation product have any secondary use?”
Asked on 10/29/2010 12:00:00 AM by Steve from Saegertown, PA 16433
    • Answer The warmers operate on a chemical reaction with air similar to rusting. The warmer ingredients are iron, water, cellulose, vermiculite, activated carbon and salt. The heating process takes place in this fashion:|The iron in the pouch, when exposed to oxygen, oxidizes and therefore produces heat (aka, "Air Activated"). When iron oxidizes it produces iron oxide, more commonly referred to as rust.|The salt acts as a catalyst. The carbon helps disperse the heat. The vermiculite is used as an insulator for the purpose of retaining the heat and the cellulose is added as a filler. All of these ingredients are surrounded by a polypropylene bag. Polypropylene allows air to permeate the ingredients while holding in moisture.|The item is a one time use product.
