This was my first internal frame pack. Before this I had a Kelty Super Cirque and was not sure how I would like the shift to internal. It fit great, very adjustable, stable, and plenty of room for even my bulky old school gear. It carries 35 to 45 lbs very comfortably, but anything over the 40 lbs mark seems to flaex it pretty heavily. The only cons are the front zipper can be a little agrevating with a full load, but I have gotten to the point of doing everything through the top anyway. I am sure there are better packs out there, but this one has been a really nice introduction to internal frames, and I would highly suggest it.

I went on my first backpacking trip in the eastern sierras where I had to hike 3 miles about 1000 feet up. It had many different access points and made finding things very easy. This pack made hiking a breeze and is a keeper.

The rubberized protective underside is a nice touch, although it adds alot to the weight. An organizers utopia!

    - use for long trips (weeklong to extended treks) - leg up for a Gregory raincover (5-6k cu.in.) - bigger than latest, spring '08 version - built better than latest model - about 500 cu. in. larger than Palisade

I chose this pack as a replacement for another large Gregory pack, which I sold (with regrets) to the porter on my last extended mountain trip. Whitney has the volume and sturdiness I need for extended trips. It is too early for extensive comment since I just bought it, but my previous experience with Gregories gives me full confidence that I made the right choice. One obvious improvement is the larger opening on the sleeping bag compartment in comparison with older models. Before, I could not fit throught it my compressed -5 degrees synthetic sleeping bag. Had to pack it through the top. Newer version of this pack (Whitney 95) also has the softer belt, which is probably more user friendly than the hard one which comes with this model. However, there is a tradeoff. The hard belt practically doesn't wear down. It still looked like new when I sold the old pack after years of heavy use. Another advantage with Gregory - it is modular. You can exchange the belt for larger or smaller size if the one that come with it does not fit.

The Whitney is one of the finest packs evey made. It has all the bells and whistles. It makes organizing gear a breeze. it is extremely comfortable and durable. The only drawback is it is a bit heavy for those who are weight-conscious.
