I purchased the 9' 8 weight for an upcoming bonefish trip as I was looking to upgrade to a better backup rod. Lawn cast it when it arrived. The rod is made reasonably well, but there are some issues, e.g., some of the guide wraps were noticeably "dry"- meaning that they needed another or heavier coat of epoxy to be smooth. The components are good- It has a good cork handle and oversize guides- but the build quality is not great, at least on the one I got. I was able to cast 70' pretty easily, and didn't notice any wobble or dead spots. It has what I would call a moderate to moderate-fast action. It is a little tip-heavy. I also bought a 9' 7wt Ross FC rod at the same time. Compared to the Ross, the Ross FC has a similar action (a little faster, I think), but is better quality and put together with more care than the Grey's Compared to my main 8 wt. a Scott STS, both the Ross and Grey's are noticeably heavier, less well-balanced, and have slower actions- but then the Scott costs many times as much as either of the others. For the price, the Grey's is a really good deal, but I would go for the Ross as it is a better rod for only a little more money at STP. The Grey's would be a good starter rod for someone getting into saltwater fly fishing or as a decent backup if you don't already have one. I suspect the casting differences between it and a high-end rod in the trout sizes are much less noticeable. But, the Grey's GS2 is clearly not as good as the best rods out there, particularly in the higher line weights. If I was choosing between the Grey's G2 and the Ross FC, I would go for the Ross. The better build quality is noticeable and the cost is not that much different when they are on sale. That being said, I returned both as I already own a couple of decent 8 weight backup rods, The Grey's GS2 is definitely fishable, and a good deal when on sale at STP

This rod has worked perfectly for me. I am still getting used to fly fishing, but I was able to catch lots of bass and bluegills over the past two weeks. The rod looks great too.

I purchased the the 7wt 9'6" which i loved so much, i purchased a 2nd GS2 in a 6wt. The quality, workmanship, and nice components for such an inexpensive rod is amazing. My favorite parts are the nice cork handle, double uplocking reel seat, and color on the blank. The rod feels like a true medium action and easily throws out line. Took me just a few casts to get in the groove. I use the 7wt for steelheading, not too heavy and i can easily throw mends.
