The box lists it as class B, but I would say its at least a B/C if not a C. Very sturdily built, and I love the double stitch sole (see my review of the Alico Summit) for its ability to be resoled but mainly for the fact that it won't surprisingly detach from the boot. I got the 9.5 UK and they are comparable to my usual 10.5 US though slightly smaller. I'd say they are like a 10.25. Internal construction is exactly what I like to see: it hugs the ankle to keep the foot in place and then spreads out in the toe box ensuring you won't get blisters from toes (or joints) rubbing against the leather. The sole is well designed with rocker to maintain a natural step despite the stiffness of the boot. Ankle support is solid and the padded area on top is very comfortable in motion. My one complaint would be that the leather seems thinner than I usually like in a trekking or mountain boot, though I can't yet attest to whether this impacts durability. Also, the sole seems to be partly composite, with a slightly softer section above the black lugged section. It seems solid, but I hope this doesn't have the same tendency to detach as a composite sole. At least if it does the boot can easily be resoled with a solid chunk of rubber. These are probably the reasons they rated these boots as class B, and certainly keep the weight lower than similarly constructed boots. Either way, At this price, you really would be making a mistake if you passed on them.

I'm fifty six and have lived in the mountains and in hiking and climbing boots since I was 12. These boots are unbelievably well made. In terms of craftsmanship, the only boots I can compare them to are the ancient and venerated Lowa Civettas & Alpspitz's from the 1970's, and these Hanwag's are as good or better than those... at maybe sixty percent of the weight. Design, I think is brilliant, the massive heel-padding makes break-in incredibly fast and easy. Leather is perfect, water seal around tongue is perfect, and anyone who buys a serious mountain boot without a proper midsole like these have.. so that you can readily re-sole them when the Vibram wears out... doesn't deserve a boot this comfortable. At $400 plus you'd have to think twice, but at what they sell them for, it's a no-brainer.

This is, honestly, the finest pair of backpacking boots I've ever worn. Break-in was relatively easy as both the leather and the sole are softer than they appear. The quality and construction of the boot itself is beyond reproach... first rate materials and first rate construction throughout. Fit is, initially, ever so slightly narrow for my high volume normal-to-wide feet, but after a couple of treatments with Obenauf's LP and daily wearing around the office and at home for the first couple of weeks, they contoured to my feet nicely.

So many great features: ball bearing lacing, soft glove leather interior, weight balance that makes these heavy boots seem much lighter in use, double stitched norwegian welt sole= durable and easily replaceable, leather-faced memory foam insole, stiff Vibram outsole with a surprising amount of shock absorption engineered in, and then the combination of soft suede and carefully placed stitching at the collar makes the tops both supportive and really comfortable. These boots are worth every penny of their retail price. I got them here for less than half that. Score!
