Reviewed by Mud runner from Ohio on Saturday, March 23, 2013Great shoe. Incredible traction in sloppy conditions. They have an oversize toe box. I would call hem an entry level minimalist though. Awesome shoe for muddy wet and shoe covered trails. Best shoe for these conditions I've ever run in.

Otherwise, they seem well constructed...in fact I purchased "Inov-8 Terroc 345 Gore-Tex® Trail Running Shoes" with similar quality contruction and much stiffer sole.

Reviewed by MTtrailrunner from MT on Tuesday, March 19, 2013The 295 has already sort of become a "minor classic" of sorts in trail running, certainly one of Inov-8s all timers. The 315s would probably suit more runners and hikers out there, but never seem to sell as well as the 295s. These are versatile, super performers on the trails. Very light weight shoes (for trail runners) and a firmer feel underfoot. This version of the 295 (last year's) has a bit more heel-toe drop than is spec'd here...probably closer to 9mm drop, which for me is great. And although it's given 3 arrows of cushion rating, I'd probably give them closer to a two and a half..they feel a touch firmer than other 3-arrow shoes I've had from Inov-8. Nice room in the forefoot, yet pretty secure through heel and midfoot. If between sizes, order down for a faster feel, order up for a bit more comfort and ability to customize (with a thicker insole or thicker wool hike/run socks). The forefoot is plenty wide enough I could have worn half size down from my Brooks/Nike size in these and done fine with the thin insoles in them. They wrap the foot nicely, but expect more "booty" like feel rather than padded, and not a lot of arch support built in. And get too big a shoe in trail runners and you'll have blisters from the foot slide and miles of corners and foot getting wrenched around. A smaller size in these felt faster, like you'd always know where your foot was with the trail. But in the end my normal running shoe size was indeed more comfy for me overall in these, and allowed me to replace with an insole with more arch support as I have a rather high arch and supinate. Great, neutral ride in these..they aren't gonna move you one direction or another on their own, though I suppose for that same reason they might not be supportive enough for some runners. Good looking shoe also, and the grippy soles offer good traction on most surfaces you come across. A bit rough and punishing on pavement or cement, etc. but they are really at home on the dirt and rocks. Worth noting that the sticky rubber compound used on the 295's almost cleat-like soles will wear down quicker than many trailrunners you might have, more so if you hike/run on the hard/baked trails or paved roads. Really a nice versatile tread and compound though. Nice toe bumper protection, plus thoughtful extra fabric placed a spots to protect the mesh from inevitable scrapes and pokes at vulnerable spots. Overall just a great, light, multi talented trail runner. Not quite "minimal" (which is ok by me) but not your beefy trail shoe either. For the weight conscious: my pair of size 10s weighed in at just a hair over 11 oz. per shoe, which is just shy of 2 oz lighter per shoe than my Brooks Cascadias and 2.5 oz lighter than my La Sportiva Raptors, both of which are excellent trail shoes in their own right.
