This is not a durable material. I have this bag and it got big scuffs in the material on the first flight. It's made out of a soft, pliable rubber that rubs off if your packed items (books, toiletry bags, tampon boxes, charger) inside make the slightest corner or awkward bulge- it's like they'll poke right through it. I'm much more careful to pack clothes on the outer layer now (pain in the neck), but still every trip I make it gets more and more deep scuffs while in transit from normal airline handling.

Also- even though most of the bag is made of waterproof material, the wide stretchy panels next to the zipper wick water in easily, soaking everything inside. At lease if you pack with the clothes under these to avoid getting holes in the luggage, your books might stay dry.

Overall- this comes close on a lot of measures, but really misses the marks on some important ones. I expect it might last me a year at most of hard travel before it gets too many holes in it to bother duct taping.

I researched ad nauseum before settling on this Columbia raincoat. I looked at the Patagonia Torrentshell and the Northface Resolve, but the reviews kept bringing me back to the Columbia. I am 60 years old, 5'4" tall, 122 pounds, normally size 4 or 6 and I ordered the medium, based on reviews on other sites suggesting that it might be tight in the hips and bust. So I ordered one size up. If you are thin without curves, you could go with a small, but I have curves. This is a very feminine cut - not "boxy" at all. The color "tank", which looks brown in the photos, is actually a beautiful olive green - a true army green - and it just looks great with jeans, khaki and black. The sleeves are a little long, but the velcro tabs are perfect and enable me to tighten them around the wrists. The length was a factor for me. I race whippets and so I am forever bending over releasing or catching dogs, and so I needed good rear-end coverage! I am very happy with my purchase. It is lightweight and will be great over my fleece tops and thick henley tops.
    • Best Uses: rain
    • Cons: Tricky zipper
    • Pros: Lightweight and feminine

Feet stay dry, snow slides off the waterproof leather. Lacing can be adjusted at bottom and up. Top calf circumference is fixed, though. I have average calves and boot is snug at top. Fit is relaxed rather than structured/supportive. Ankles are slouchy. (Room for sock turn-over.) Leg fits tightly, not much room for pants. Tongue is seam-sealed: no snow can get in. Quality construction. Stitching is decorative - boot is seam-sealed.
    • Best Uses: Walking in winter
    • Cons: Poor fit, Uncomfortable
    • Describe Yourself: Urban walker
    • Pros: Durable, Lightweight, Snow slides off, Waterproof
    • Sizing: Feels true to size

    • Width: Feels true to width
