    • Answer Basting is a loose stitch done with white cotton thread. It is meant to be temporary. The pieces of a cut garment are basted together so that the garment can be tested on the customer, to check for fit and/or balance problems. It would be a lot of work, and a serious expense, to use silk finishing thread and do all those stitches the right way, only to have to rip them out and do it all over if there are problems. So basting stitches allow the garment to be put together in a provisional way BEFORE it is really sewn together and truly "made."||Thus, "basted sleeves" means that the sleeves have merely been basted in with temporary thread, but have not been formally attached. The tailor takes that opportunity to check how the sleeves hang in particular, and also the pitch and taper of the sleeves, as well as the width of the shoulders.
