My kids and I hike, a lot. Our old backpack got too small to hold water, snacks, essentials and "layers." I upgraded to this backpack and am quite happy. It's small enough that it doesn't hurt my back while hiking but large enough to comfortably hold what we need. Suppose you really can't go wrong with Keen.

the expandable pocket on the outside is really useful for carrying tools and sweaters, even a large laptop fits inside and backpack seems well made, enough pockets to hold everything nicely. the rubber coated bottom is especially good for a rainy, muddy winter.
