Perfect for that final ascent with backpack gear as it is lightweight. Seems to be built fairly well.

Verified Buyer Reviewed by Joe from Wisconsin on Wednesday, December 9, 2015Bought this shovel to keep in the trunk in case of emergency. Great quality, but small blade(8" by 11"). I will keep it,but go forewarned.
Reviewed by Abe from Park City, UT on Wednesday, October 8, 2014As I stated in the picture I submitted, this shovel is not for avalanche rescue, it snapped the first time I used it for a beacon search in firm snow, snapped like a twig... It's fine for a car shovel but it's nothing more then that. Don't go cheapo on a lifesaving piece of emergency rescue gear, get a good shovel!
Reviewed by J Barnes from Colorado on Wednesday, September 24, 2014Bought this shovel at a decent price for my first season in the backcountry. A year later I have to replace it.
The good: The cost. The previous review?
The okay: Its a shovel. Relatively lightweight.
The bad: Its not aluminum. At your first avy class you'll see why metal is preferable. Sharper, and harder. Easier to cut through the snow pack.
The ugly: One of the internal springs popped out and is a PITA to retrieve, rending the shovel rather useless. It happened as I was digging a pit.
The other ugly: Multiple pieces = more to loose.
Bottom line: Buy the single piece, aluminum shovel from Black Diamond.
