The poles were supposed to have a compass in the handle. The first set of poles delivered, did not have the compass in the handle. I returned the poles, explained the problem, and asked for a replacement with the compass in the handle. I received a second set of poles, again without the compass in the handle[...]

Having used this same locking mechanism since the mid '80s in adjustable ski poles, I understand peoples irritation. You need to take these apart on a regular basis and clean and LIGHTLY!!! lube the spreader shaft(not pole shaft). By slightly bending the pole when tightening, you can get a very secure lock. Also, tighten regularly as you're walking. I have had zero trouble with mine and I find this locking method to be superior to others over the long term. Thanks for a great product.

These things are great, although make sure you purchase larger bails if you're going to use these in the snow!

The locking system is unreliable. The internal expandable plastic sleeves that twist-lock the poles broke after just 2 uses when in the backcountry. No spare parts available. Poles are collapsing and therefore useless. Contrary to advertising, the straps are not padded, just made of webbing, in the pair I got. Better get poles with a different, more reliable locking system.

I thought trekking poles were for only for folks with joint problems. Then my friend lent me a pair on Kilimanjaro, and I've never been the same. Took these on a hike through Yosemite, and even for short jaunts, they make life easier. They're light and sturdy. Wrist straps are easily adjustable. What else could you want?

Another manufacturer has a very different locking system on their adjustable poles (reputedly more stable), but these Komperdells just looked so good and light. Well, it wasn't long until in the middle of a stream crossing one collapsed. Maybe it was the water, maybe a very aggressive trout. We'll never know because it's gone gone gone ... [...] This is the first time I've been totally disappointed by two companies in one transaction.A shoddy experience all around.

I like the lightweight of these hiking poles and also the built-in compass and double grip. The red, silver and black color is very attractive.
