Any boot can handle a trail. My wife hiked 400 miles of the PCT through the Sierras wearing some mesh style boat shoes from Bass Pro Shops. Where these babies shine is the off trail/bushwacking department. I have had probably a half dozen pair of hiking and running shoes from Sportiva and these are by far the best ones I have ever owned. I work as a Geophysical Surveyor in Nevada which means many kms of rough off trail limestone/basalt rocky hiking. I am a snob when it comes to my boots. These boot will destroy any other boot out there. You can stomp down a scree field or burn up a rocky hillside and these boots can handle it all. My coworkers opt for a traditional hiking style boot but after a couple of months they get totally trashed and my Sportivas are still kicking. These are soooo much better than regular dinky hiking boots. I think the secret is that the soles are a little thicker than other boots which means the uppper material isn't getting trashed as easily. These boots really excel at off trail where they can easily handle the abuse. Worth the price for sure.

I like La Sportiva as they seem to fit my feet well. Have several and they are well built, tough and reliable.

    • Pros: Good fit sturdy

I really liked the boots but just too narrow. They walk quite and are stable but couldn't get the right foot comfortable. I like them enough that I bought two different sizes.Wish they fit.
    • Cons: Too narrow
    • Pros: Quite and stable

I love these boots. I put my own footbeds in them and wore them on a 10-mile hike/scramble the first time I wore them. No blisters. No hot spots. I hike a lot in the Sierras, and I love the fact that I can be fairly comfortable just trail hiking yet can take off cross-country at any time and feel confident of my footing on snow, talus, scree, and rock. They're heavier than my light dry-trail boots, of course, but much more comfortable than most boots I've used in snow, and better on rock than most snow boots. I was SO glad to see them at Sierra Trading Post, as they are no longer available in any stores that I frequent. I now have two pair, and frankly am thinking of buying another pair, so that it will be quite a while before I have to go through the agony and expense and frustration of experimenting with mountaineering boots again. The one drawback is the cloth in the uppers, as my first pair got a tear after only a month or so. But the tear hasn't gotten any worse over time, and what do you expect? Everything is a trade-off. The suppleness of the uppers is one of the best things about them. If the uppers wear out before the soles, fine by me as long as my feet are comfortable.
    • Best Uses: Backpacking, General Mountaineering, Scrambling, Snow travel
    • Cons: Durability
    • Pros: Easy break-in, Just right, Lightweight

Good boot with support, good traction on wet and slippery surfaces, and good durability. Worked well for me on a Thru-hike of the AT. I like more support and carry a heavy pack so lite hikers are not appropriate for me. For the weight I thought these were a perfect mix of durability, traction, and support. Never a blister for me. But if they get wet they take forever to dry and others say they are a little heavy for thru-hiking.
    • Best Uses: Backpacking
    • Cons: Weight
    • Pros: durability, Support, Traction

    • Answer Yes the La Sportiva Cascade Gore-Tex® Hiking Boots can be wore with strap on crampons.
Answered on 9/20/2011 12:00:00 AM by Customer Care from Sierra Trading Post
    • Answer I have not used these boots with crampons, but I think they would be fine for crossing frozen snowfields, etc. I've tossed my crampons in my pack with the intention of using them with these boots, but thus far I've gotten by with kicking steps. I think that answers your question right there, as just about any boot stiff enough to kick steps in hard snow will work with strap-on crampons. I weigh about 230 lbs, and with size 46.5 boots on they are too flexible for me to consider front-pointing all day in them. But on a mixed climb or crossing a snowfield, they would be fine. A lighter person with a smaller boot would find them relatively stiffer, and perhaps more appropriate for more extended technical cramponing.
