I extend these poles longer than normal and somewhat drag them behind me... then plant and push...I am thus able to actually propel myself forward with my normal arm swing and with very little extra energy....almost like walking with 4 legs ...only upright.....I wonder if Leki thought of this....too bad they are abandoning this design. They work better than any others.....but NOT the ones with shocks!!! those are stupid!

I prefer this to the hiking poles because it puts less strain on my shoulders, while giving all the support I need for knees and back. It's easy to use, especially downhill. Well made and works as it should.

I used this instead of the one crutch I had been using. I have a broken Femur have been using one crutch for about a week before I headed to vacation. I wanted to travel lighter so i took a chance and left the crutch at home and bought this. I worked great. Not as much support as a crutch but defiantly helped me get around. I'm 250 lbs and was slightly concerned this would be able to take the abuse, no worries. Never felt like I was pushing the limit of this cane. One time on another cane we bought for my father it didn't want to lock. Just had to pop the two sections apart and start the thread to locking mechanism. quick 10 sec fix. I'd say that as a trekking pole using a vertical grip it is too short for someone 6'1" like myself. maybe 2" short but as a cane plenty long.

I'm suffering from the effects of a stroke and I walk with a limp. I don't like using traditional canes, because they are heavy, bulky, and not stylish. This walking stick is tough, stylish, and light weight. I get complements about it everywhere, and they cost you more at REI:)
