Design is woven in, NOT painted on, it stretches some, but looks good, dresses up plain old hiking socks. I got the small, wear a 6.5 shoe and they fit perfect. Would buy them again...

These are midweight with padding on the sole, but not on the top of the foot. The toe seam is nicely finished and I had no issues with being able to feel it or chafing. Wore them with some pretty heavy duty hiking boots (kayland hard sole with very firm ankle high top, very close-fitting) and found them to be a good match - they did a good job of protecting my feet from the boots and aren't so overly padded that they make the boots too tight.

I agree that it's more mid weight than light, with most of that weight in the sole cushion. It's not clear in the description, but the patterned top edge is a fold down cuff. If you have short boots that fit just so it might work as a boot topper, but I don't have any boots the right height to try. If you want the sock a little higher you can flip the cuff up so the pattern is hidden. The cuff top is a little snug around the leg, but not too tight.
