I used this jacket going up to Trail Camp at Mt. Whitney January of 11. The jacket was fine but did not use it that much because we had excellent weather. I don't think this jacket is great for regular backpacking because it's too heavy (too much protection for regular backpacking); it's also not ...

I'm 6ft and 240lbs (with somewhat long arms and torso) and, although I wear 2XL shirts, the XL size of this jacket fits me perfectly, with enough fulness to accommodate a sweater underneath. So some would consider it a bit larger than its stated size.
The visored hood folds up and is concealed behind the tall collar, enhancing the jacket's appearance for social occasions when maximal protection is not needed. The inside surface of that tall, padded collar is lined with a soft fabric, very comfortable against the skin when the temp drops, but probably not so desirable in warm weather. The angled front pockets are hand friendly for a quick trip into the cold without gloves. The zipper is covered by 2 flaps, the outer one secured with velcro, a very effective barrier, along with the GoreTex fabric, to wind intrusion, and only a minor inconvenience to gaining access to the zipper. That left-sided zipper, however, the major source of criticism by others, is very difficult to initially align properly, making zipping up an annoyingly slow and deliberate process. This is the only reason for not giving this jacket a 5-star rating.
Overall, this Lowe Alpine jacket appears to be well made, with features that would make it ideal for cool and inclement weather. I would just recommend zipping up BEFORE you go outside if it's cold and windy or raining! I'm glad I saw this jacket on your site, in my size and especially on sale.

Protection from rain with rare excellent design. Gore-tex a huge plus. The cuffs have easy-to-use velcro to keep rain and wind at bay and when you're out of the weather the velcro at the wrists can be quickly re-opened for good ventilation. The high collar provides excellent shelter from snow and rain. The two-color motif is a plus in the style dept. Length is just right -- long enough to cover the tops of the thighs yet still light-weight. High value overall.

I only have one minor complaint. The jacket feels larger than described. Which leaves room for heavier clothing underneath in cooler weather. Also the zipper is on the left side which will take some adjusting to.
