After setting up shop on his small Vermont property, Jim named his new company after the Mad River, which flowed near his home. This boat is 13 feet long not 12 !
Just purchased one for my tall son so he could have some room for his size 17 feet. The outrage was just too small at 12 feet. He has paddled it on class 1 and likes it. I have paddled it as well and enjoyed the ride. I'm not crazy about the size since I paddle an 11foot Ocoee. The X is a great boat for larger paddlers. I'm 6'3" and 200#s . My son is 6'7" and 225#s.
I got mine used but this is a good deal for a new one.

This Mad River Canoe with blemishes is extremely functional and lightweight. I have had it on the water already and been on fish easily. It loads on and off of my car without issue and is stable for tracking and fishing.

First of all, this canoe is a the same hull design as the discontinued Dagger Reflection 17, and is now made under the MRC label (they now share the same parent company-Confluence Watersports). This canoe is made of Royalex and production of this material will end in 2014, so this canoe is essentially discontinued as well. This boat is a good day tripping canoe and should handle the float camping I do on rivers in the midwest well, with an occasional trip to BWCAW.

I received my Reflection 17 in excellent condition, Sierra Trading knows how to package boats for shipment. My only concern is that the description indicates that there are "wood drops" (seat hangers), "Vinyl gunwales", "Cane seats", and "Cup holders (2)". The canoe I recieved had nylon webbing seats, nylon drops (seat hangers), aluminum gunwales, and no cup holders! So buyer beware if these options are important to your purchasing decision. I can live without cup holers, however, I was expecting cane seats and wood hangers and most importantly vinyl clad aluminum gunwale, and was disappointed. The nylon webbing wood seats should hold up as well as the cane seats, however, the nylon clad aluminum gunwales would have been better suited for river tripping use. Alas, this canoe does not match the description and what I had thought I ordered.
