High quality shell and tremendously warm and comfortable with proper layers beneath. The fit and fabric are top quality. Love the deep functional venting pockets, unlike some of the high shallow pockets on other technical shells I own. One small observation along with the minor zipper issues mentioned in other reviews - the pictures show a vented collar to breathe through. The jacket I received has no vent holes, just a very high collar. Not a huge issue, but one of the reasons I ordered this coat. Too nice all-around otherwise to send back. The zipper is not a reason not to buy this, it just sticks from time to time and can be avoided as you get used to positioning the inside flap material. I really am finding this to be a new favorite. Dry tech fabric feels better than pro shell though durability has not yet been put through an Adirondack bushwhack.

Love the design, but may return it, the zipper was hard to get started, then I got used to it, but now it is sticking in the middle of the jacket. Will give it another outing, anymore probs and back it goes.

This jacket is just as described. It is very lightweight, seems to be waterproof(to be proven)and well made. I am 5'13'', 220 lbs. and the 2XL fits perfectly; leaving plenty of room for a fleece layer, which you'll need for cold conditions. One problem I have with this garment is: The left handed zipper jams on the rubber membrane behind it. I have jackets made by other respectable names like: Mountain Hardwear and The North Face and zippers just seem to be a temperamental issue, especially when attempting to keep out H2O. Don't let this keep you from buying this jacket. well worth the price! Sierra Trading Post is the best place to shop! The more you buy, the more you save, which leaves you better equipped and not dead in our great outdoors.

I thought it would be warmer and not so much just a shell. I returned it but still a beautiful jacket, just not what I was looking for. I would say that it ran large, probably good for lots of layers underneath. I also had hoped the hood was removable but it was not.

The jacket is very attractive and looks well made except the zipper. Not one time did it want to zip all the way up. It goes a 1/3 of the way and gets stuck. We didn't get a dud, it's just a terrible design. That would be awful out in the snow/rain. I generally really like Mammut stuff but they struck out here. For anyone wondering about size, my husband is 6' tall, 190 or so but muscular and lean. 42-43 chest. We got him an xl based on chest size but its too big and a little too much of a boxy cut. A Large would have been better.

Great Jacket, Zipper is opposite of most American Men's jackets, but still works smoothly. If the hood is not up, it's a little intrusive, but the breather vents are a nice feature. I am 5'10", 165lbs and have a 42" chest and if I were to wear more than a base layer the jacket would be a little more snug than I would like. But overall if you have a 40-41" chest you could layer and probably use this jacket for almost every on mountain activity.

Bought this jacket for a snowboarding trip to Montana, and it did not let me down. First, the negatives, of which there are very few. The zippers are sometimes tricky, being hard to operate one-handed or with gloves on. Also, the zipper is on the wrong side, so dont be suprised if your friends (or even a random stranger) makes fun of you for it! There is also no powder skirt, but then again it didnt advertise itself as a ski-specific jacket so that can be forgiven. Completely minor, basically non-issues. Now to the good things about this jacket: The hood is amazing, especially when wearing a helmet, and the microfiber fleece and perspiration holes on the chin are greatly appreciated. The hood also works great without a helmet, as the pulls work very nicely (even if they are kinda hard to operate). *The jacket is COMPLETELY water/snow/windproof, which is the single most important aspect of a hardshell. For this alone I can give the jacket 5 stars. The fit is very nice, if maybe a little bit short in the back. I would order up a size if you plan on layering at all, or if using it in the snow (why wouldnt you?). Very stylish and attractive piece of clothing, I got many compliments on it. The pit zips are nice to have, but like all the zippers on the jacket, they can be a little tricky to operate, especially with one hand. Although i have only had it for 3 months, the durability looks to be outstanding. Hard falls onto hard ice, tangles with sharp branches, even a few impromptu bouldering sessions didnt leave a mark on it. This is extremely important to me, as I try to buy gear that will last. All in all, I love the Makalu, especially when on sale. It has kept me dry in adverse conditions, looks great, is pretty breathable, and is extremely durable. Highly recommended.
