It seems like primaloft (trade name) is at such a premium price wise so I found Marmot...(insulation supposed to be as good as primaloft) so far it is working out well...I like the extra mobility and the light weight alternative for sports and for general running around. The weather warmed the day that my coat arrived, so I haven't actually used it in the cold but my experience with Marmot has been positive. The coat fits well and appears to be quality. I've been looking for a coat for travel that is light but warmed that my running jackets. The Caldera looks like it will be perfect. It doesn't pack as small as a down coat but it does compress well enough and it is machine washable. The price was is the spectacular range.

While I have not done any extensive comparison of this type of jacket for myself, I did try on EMS and found it both too tight and less attractive. Additionally, the Marmot just works well - zippers are smooth and easy, good breath-ability and great for temp's in the 40's and 50's. Lastly - some other family member have similar products with down fill - all more expensive than this one (great deal at Sierra of course) plus I like the easier care of synthetic fill.

The Marmot Caldera Jacket is okay for what it is. However if you are looking for a warm winter jacket this isn't it. The jacket itself is very light weight and provides good range of motion . It is adequate for mild temps but is advertised for 30 degrees and I myself would not like to be out for any length of time in this jacket at that temp.

About Marmot

Conceived in a university dorm room by a pair of climbing buddies, Marmot Mountain Works first opened its doors in the spring of 1974 in Grand Junction, Colorado. At the time, the base of operations was a 100-year-old stone building. That same year, the first Marmot down jacket was produced specifically for an action flick called “The Eiger Sanction,” starring legendary actor Clint Eastwood. In the four decades since, Marmot has continued to engineer reliable gear that exceeds the expectations of outdoor athletes. Today, Marmot tents, backpacks, outerwear, clothing and Marmot sleeping bags are still pushing the limits in the planet’s most challenging conditions, from the summits of the world’s highest mountains to the deepest river basins.
