5.0 out of 5 stars. Organization Plus

The MARMOT Granite Backpack is identical to the Gunnison pack carried by a major sporting goods chain, and retailing for $90! Obviously, DERAILED gives you a better deal. Plus if you are going to use this pack in the field for hunting, birding, or just like to keep a low profile, gray is the color to get.

The Granite will keep you well supplied for an all day trail trek. If you are on campus, this will swallow a full course load, and provide extra space for your munchies and all of your toys. My primary use is for day hiking, for which this pack is ideal. The organization features 5 easy access outside compartments, two full length interior compartments, and there is sufficient padding inside and out to protect your camera gear, binoculars, etc. I am using this packs for full day excursions on the trail, and everything I need is organized and has a place. The pack is 32L, or 2,000 cubic inches. It will hold even more than this space suggests, as there is an outside compression fitted flap that will hold a rain jacket for fast access. The shoulder straps are also well designed and this backpack is very comfortable on the shoulders and back. There is also a sternum strap. Only caveat is a hip belt, even one that is minimalist, would help under load. However, properly adjusted and with the sternum strap in place, the pack is stable and does ride well. So the caveat is more of a nit pick. And it only applies when the pack is loaded to and beyond capacity, and you are hiking up and down a steep trail.

I have hiked for many years and am a minimalist, so this pack would work as an overnighter providing you can control your appetite for unnecessary baggage. A 2 pound down bag, and a 3.5 pound tent would fit inside, no sweat. The two side compartments, which I use for water bottles, zip closed. I have found that two 10 ounce Zojurushi bottles are ideal for a half day hiking, and they will allow you to zip up the bottle compartments.

Do I like this pack? NO. I love it. And there is no reason to pay more for it than you need to pay. This was my first purchase from DERAILED, and they delivered in a substantial box, and delivered it on time. Very impressed with this website and the Granite Backpack. You will not be disappointed.

Bought this for my husband as a birthday present - he loves it! Lots of zippers and pockets for all different sized items. I think there is even a padded laptop pocket. Planning to use this as a day pack for traveling.
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars. Great Climbing Pack!

This is my second Granite pack. I bought the first one in hopes that because of all the separate compartments it might make a good rock climbing pack. Well, it sure did! What I don't like about most climbing packs is that just about everything goes into one main compartment. This means having to dig through to find this or that. I hate that. With the Granite's eight compartments I'm able to keep things organized, separate, and easily accessible. I love it so much I bought a second one to have for my other climbing needs - one for soloing and one for sport/trad/top rope.

The downside, this pack is discontinued! I called Marmot to ask them to please bring it back, market it as a climbing pack and make a version that is a bit bigger to accommodate more gear. I hope they do. If so, and you're a climber, get one - or two!!!
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars. Not worth the time returning it

I received this item with a rip in the zipped inside pouch upon receipt. It is a small rip but not worth returning for a replacement so for that reason alone this item gets 2 stars only. I like the backpack other than the one problem
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars. Bang for the buck

Very good pack for the money. Tons of compartments and expansion space, seems very good quality for the price and will last me quite a while. I've only done day hikes with it so far but this pack can expand large enough to even put a sleeping back in there for an overnight trip. I live a mile from the Appalachian trail and there are shelters along it quite often so theres no need to carry a tent.
My only real complaint is although the back panel is cushioned it does not vent very well at all. Even on an easy 4 hour hike on a day with temps in the 50's my back was completely soaked with sweat. So I took 1 star off for that.
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars. Amazing bag

The pack is great! I bought it for school to carry all of my books and binders for the day because my messenger bag i was using could not hold everything and i was getting tired of walking out to my car several times a day. But this pack is able to hold everything for all 4 classes plus have room form graphing calculator, 32oz nalgene bottle, computer and cord, sunglasses, scrub pants, shoes, etc. And i still have room for more. Yes with all of that in my pack its heavy but it rides well. The 2 compression straps on each side help the ride. I also use them to secure my nalgene bottle because it is too large for the side zip pockets to close completely.
This pack could easily hold enough for an overnight trip. And maybe even a 2 maybe 3 night trip depending on the gear you need.

About Marmot

Conceived in a university dorm room by a pair of climbing buddies, Marmot Mountain Works first opened its doors in the spring of 1974 in Grand Junction, Colorado. At the time, the base of operations was a 100-year-old stone building. That same year, the first Marmot down jacket was produced specifically for an action flick called “The Eiger Sanction,” starring legendary actor Clint Eastwood. In the four decades since, Marmot has continued to engineer reliable gear that exceeds the expectations of outdoor athletes. Today, Marmot tents, backpacks, outerwear, clothing and Marmot sleeping bags are still pushing the limits in the planet’s most challenging conditions, from the summits of the world’s highest mountains to the deepest river basins.
