very lightweight, waterproof, windproof jacket good for almost everything. If its really cold you definetely need an insulated layer. For how thin it is i use it a lot with just a shirt in blasting rain and i never get that cold wetness feel i get with other lightweight rain jackets, your not really...

A good combination of waterproof es and breathability. It sheds rain well and I like the pit-zips. It runs true to size with room to layer in colder weather. I have bought other Marmot products through the years, and have never been disappointed in the quality. The STP price makes this an excellent value. I would recommend this jacket.

Now that I've had it for a few months, I can definitely say that it's worth much, much more than what I paid. It has definitely lived up to the Marmot reputation. It has gone through multiple heavy downpours and has kept me dry. I'm 5'9" (165 lb) and the medium fits great and the blue color is really nice. This is the only jacket that I've owned that random strangers have commented on liking the jacket.

Answer Don't know anything about the precip, bu I wouldn't use this raincoat for hunting, so therefore I guess not a good choice for photography. Does make a little noise when you move. Maybe check out some hunting raincoats (cabela's?)

Answer I don't have much experience with the Precip, and I don't really have a need to be quiet, but it does have a more shell like material that is quieter than the kind of material the precip uses.

Answer No, it is much quieter. If you're on a bike, it "flaps" a bit. But it's nothing like the Precip, not crinkly in the same way.

Answer Photographer here as well. No experience with the Precip, but this coat does make a little noise as you move - that crinkling "folded blue tarp" sound. Personally I think it's quiet enough if you're stationary and only really moving your arms to photograph - but if you need to be absolutely silent (i.e. birds), you might want to look at a softshell instead.....

Answer This jacket does not make a lot of noise. It was apparently designed with an emphasis on light weight and precip protection, so it's not as quiet as some hunting jackets designed for stalking, But, if it's raining outside, I don't think many critters will hear this jacket.

Answer We have 3 of these jackets and I wouldn't have kept buying them if the fit was constricting. I think this jacket does have the angel wing cut. Check out the description of the jacket on some other sites and I think it may be stated.

Answer Not sure what you mean by angle wing, but the jacket has excellent movement in the shoulders with room to wear an undergarment when the weather is cold. I normally wear a large in Marmot jackets and this jacket has the necessary extra room for good movement while maintaining proper fit.

Answer Sorry, Eric, I don't have other Marmot jackets with this "angel wing" movement you mention. Perhaps you are referring to whether the sleeves are extra wide at the top? If so, it seems like the sleeves are just right, but not like "wings," and allow for layering (a thin, ultralight down vest was worn with this recently, and the jacket fit just fine). Bought this for my husband, and he likes it a lot. It's more beefy than the Marmot Precip line, and it seems like it will be a great lightweight raincoat.

Answer the seam sealing on the optima is better….being gore-tex. it will offer better protection from the elements. the fabric on the optima is also thicker and just seems like it is better quality. i have only had the chance to wear the jacket a few times but have been very happy with it.

Answer Gortex,Gortex,Gortex That is the main difference I see. I don't own the precip, but I understand it's a great buy for a rain jacket! I use my paclite as both a shell and a rain jacket and wanted the "extra" breath-ability that I know Gortex offers. I've never tried a nylon vs Gortex durability study, but I do have a 10 year old gortex "old" school with the mesh liner rain jacket. It still works even with a few patches. I needed a replacement, because it became a "trust" problem and potentially one my life could depend on... don't get wet!

Answer Jacket can be used in certain summer conditions. As Marmot advertises it is great for trekking, hiking, backpacking, mountaineering, cycling, hunting, fishing, golfing and water sports. Not all of these are winter activities.
