Great, lightweight waterproof jacket. Backpacker magazine just rated this the top waterproof jacket for less than $100. For the price, very breathable. Highly recommend.

Got exactly what I wanted in a lightweight rain coat for backpacking, and also everyday wear around home. Pit zips are nice for warm days.
  • Verified Buyer Reviewed by Tom from Minnesota on Sunday, August 31, 2014
I actually have the same coat in a different color that I payed full price for. I thought I would buy another one in a different color because of the great quality at a low price. It poured rain one day when I was fishing in Alaska but the jacket kept me bone dry underneath. Light weight and keeps the rain out. Excellent value at a low price.

Everyone loves the Precip and the new model (not this one) is supposed to be 43 percent more breathable than the last. I hope so because like most laminate waterproof jackets, I don't find this one breathable enough for strenuous exercise. It's perfect for walking around town and light hiking, but humid Mid-Atlantic summers? Keep those pit zips wide open! Look for some of the more technical fabrics for backpacking and other activities in truly wet and humid climes. Like Baltimore.

  • Question “Does this jacket have an adjustable hood? If so how does it work?”
Asked on 4/17/2014 1:25:05 PM by Scott C from SW Colorado
    • Answer The hood has a draw string and the collar also has a velcro strap so the hood can be rolled and fixed to the collar so it is out of the way.

    • Answer Works well only with a hat, that has a bill. Without a hat the front of it wants to block your vision. Not good when trying to walk on a trail.

    • Answer The jacket has a pull chord on each side of the hood at the top of the front zipper that allows you to tighten the front edge of the hood around your face. It also has a velcro adjustment on the rear exterior to reduce the hood height.
Answered on 4/17/2014 3:14:46 PM by Jack from Maryland
    • Answer I always wear a hat to keep the bill out of my eyes since it is not stiff, but that's pretty common with this type of jacket.
Answered on 4/17/2014 3:18:17 PM by Jack from Maryland
    • Answer Yes. it's very adjustable. Velcro tab on top pulls the hood back if needed and standard draw strings pulls the hood over your face as you find on most hoodies. Hope that helps.
Answered on 4/17/2014 5:04:51 PM by David Dawson from Meadville, PA
    • Answer Yes, the hood is adjustable in the forward/back position only by using the Velcro strip on the back of the hood. The hood can not be removed though.
Answered on 4/17/2014 5:09:39 PM by KYJoe from KY
    • Answer You can roll the hood down behind the neck and secure it with a velcro tab if you do not wish to use it.
Answered on 4/17/2014 7:37:09 PM by macmom from Iowa
    • Answer Yes the hood is adjustable.
It has a draw string, hidden inside the hood, along the open edge, to snug up around the face - the draw string is adjustable from both sides - left & right. It also has a velcro tab on the back, outside, to adjust the location of the hood fore and aft on the head.
Answered on 4/17/2014 10:04:54 PM by droF from Novi, Michigan
    • Answer It does. There are elastic drawstrings at either side of the neck that tighten the hood on both sides, up to the visor. The visor part on top does not tighten. There is also a thin velcro strip on the back of the hood that can be used for adjustment. There is no special pocket or strap on the jacket for stowing the hood away.

    • Answer No, not adjustable--the rim of the hood fits perfectly onto the bill of a baseball cap, if that helps...........

    • Answer Yes, this jacket has an adjustable hood with a thin Velcro Band. You can change the size only vertically by changing the velcro lenght. But I find it not quite useful.

    • Answer My chest measures 48" around, just under my armpits and my XXL Precip jacket-waterproof (for men) fits comfortably over a shirt., and is still comfortable over a light fleece vest. I measured my Precip in the same area and I got 53" just under the armpits.

    • Answer I can't answer this specifically, but I found mine to run a bit small compared to other brands. Although I usually wear a medium, I found the large to fit perfectly well.
Answered on 4/14/2014 3:25:20 PM by Paul from Seattle
    • Answer 50-53 is correct. I can fit a down vest, sweatshirt, and two other layers under it comfortably.
      Generous sizing......

    • Answer Wish I could answer you're question Scott but I ordered a medium and the sizing chart was correct for the medium. You'll have to ask Sierra about the 2xl sizing chart.

    • Answer I don't have a tape measure. All I can tell you is this: I'm a fat boy, with moobs; I still have plenty of room in this thing, across the chest, even when completely zippered. I would probably err on the larger 50-53. Hope that helps ;)

    • Answer The jacket has 2 interior mesh pockets, the hood is not removable and cannot be secured in the collar.
Answered on 10/17/2013 10:33:24 AM by Prod. Spec. Kevin from Sierra Trading Post
    • Answer The Marmot Precip jackets I own appear to have no 'interior pockets' though there are two exterior ones that can be left open for venting on warmer dry days, as these are mesh lined. The hood can be rolled-up alongside the outside of the collar, it can be held there by a single velcro-like loop-hook fabric tab in the middle of the hood and this also looks as though it could be used to adjust the depth of the hood when it is in use.....

      {My much older Marmot lightweight rain jacket that looks somewhat like a Precip, and this has a stow-away collar and interior accessed pocket; when I contacted Marmot about it, they could not tell me what exact model jacket it was and there is no name tag saying so; the older one is in near perfect condition after 6+ years and also has a full-mesh lining throughout the arms & body. Marmot could not tell me what model/name this one was.}

.... You could try contacting Marmot direct by by phone or email to ask them about specific jacket features and model names which may have them. I'd recently sent a Marmot Precip back for warranty consideration, and they said new models should be out (on their site) by March/April 2014, when I spoke to someone on the phone.
