I bought one of these jackets about 10 years ago, used it often and loved it. Recently I was walking in a torrential downpour that it resisted but couldn't keep up with. However, it had been washed and hung to dry numerous times so I ordered a new one. I hike, ride bikes, camp, go out on the boat... Read More

I ordered this in an XL to fit over a fleece. Even without a fleece it was tight. Fit more like a M-L. Other than that, it's a nice jacket and would do the job if it fit. If buying a Precip, be sure to check the style number. I think this is an old style. I bought a newer style at a store and it is true to size. Colors differ, too.

I tried this in a Medium and Large as a gift for my sister. She's a size 10 and I'm a 12. The M was so snug that I was afraid she wouldn't be able to wear a sweater under it comfortably, and the L would have been too big for her because it fit me. It has some great features for a light-duty breathable shell, but also a rather boxy shape. We both like a cut more fitted to the female form.

    • Answer I am 5'4", weigh 155, usually wear a 12, and have the jacket in Large. Fits fine so I think the XL would be a 14-16.
Answered on 9/23/2014 3:58:50 PM by Dee da Lee from Chicago
    • Answer Thank you, Dee. That's what I thought. Don't know why STP says XL(12). Very confusing.

    • Answer Definitely more like a 16. It's plenty big and I'm normally an XL or 16.
Answered on 9/23/2014 5:15:36 PM by Maine Hiker from Maine
    • Answer I have no idea. I am usually a small (size 6). I ordered a medium so that I could be sure there would be room for several layers underneath. The medium is maybe a tiny bit big for me but perfect for layering.
Answered on 9/23/2014 6:00:47 PM by Happy Hiker from Ohio
    • Answer I ordered the Large. I am 5'9", 140 #. Typically I wear a medium or large depending I the fit. The large is a nice fit allowing for layering but not too bulky over t-shirts. Guessing the large would correlate to the 12.

Answered on 9/24/2014 5:47:58 AM by Kroblin from Tulsa
    • Answer Not sure on this as I normally wear a size 8-10, small shirts, medium pants. The Marmot jacket I bought is a size L based upon suggestions of other reviewers at the time as they said it ran small, and to order up a size if you want to layer a sweater or fleece underneath. I'm glad I got the large, if I had ordered the medium I think it would have been too small for me. I hope this helps!
Answered on 9/24/2014 6:25:20 AM by Pug Mom from NY
    • Answer I originally ordered medium--which usually fits my long arms well. Returned it for the small--which fit my arm length and is roomy in the body. It is plenty big--the medium was way too big all over. (I think I would list the small as size 8--10.)

    • Answer I got a medium so I would be sure to have room in it for layers. (I normally wear a small in jackets.) It states that is a size 8. I would give it a 10 for sure. It's very roomy.

    • Answer I would say it is a 14/16. I am not a small woman - 175 pounds and 5'10" and it fit me great.

    • Answer Seems like 12 is what they mean. I bought an S (6) size and it really is size 6.
Answered on 10/9/2014 6:04:27 AM by ric from Philadelphia
    • Answer The jacket arrived and it is more like a 12 than an XL. Now I see why STP has it listed as a XL(12), although that is confusing. I never could have gotten it on over a light fleece or sweater. Returned it. This is an older style of Precip. AN XL from REI was plenty big.

    • Answer The jacket is goes just about to the hip bones, perhaps 8" below the waist. Very nice jacket - tested it in Alaska. I fell into a river briefly, had the jacket on over my fishing waders. We were told to wear breathable, quick dry clothing for our 'adventures'. Now I see exactly why. I took off the jacket, hung it on a branch and it dried in minutes! Perfect.

Answered on 7/24/2014 7:32:26 AM by WWGW from Virginia
    • Answer The specs state 28" for the medium. I'm 5'6" and it falls at the top of my thighs, though it is a little longer in the back (which is nice).
Answered on 7/24/2014 8:24:58 AM by RainyRD from Pacific Northwest
    • Answer I don't know the measurements, but on me (5'2") the front is mid-hip length, and the back is curved and comes a bit lower. Fyi, by now I've taken this jacket on several hiking trips where we encountered steady rain. It performed very well and has some really convenient features (pit zips to avoid overheating, soft lining where it comes to your chin, ability to pack it into its own pocket and easily throw it in a pack until needed). I've been very happy with mine.

    • Answer It hits me just below the the butt. I'm 5'6" and ordered an extra large for adding layers underneath, so I think it's a bit longer on me than it would be if I had ordered a size smaller.

    • Answer On me ( and I'm 5'6"), it goes to my hips, which is exactly what I had expected and wanted. Hope this helps.

    • Answer Yes. This is a sweet little jacket with nice details like that for such little weight. Stuffs up quite small and is light enough to always have in the daypack. The zippered pockets are oriented high enough that they are accessible above a pack waistbelt. Both zipper and hook-and-loop closure for the front, handy should the zipper fail when out. Very happy I purchased this.

  • Question “does the hood roll up and stow in the collar or can it be removed via zipper or snaps?”
Asked on 12/31/2013 3:43:35 PM by Scott, the husband from New Jersey
    • Answer No, and no. The hood is there all the time--this is not one of those super-light windbreakers / rain jackets with a removable or hidden hood, this is a serious rain jacket.
Answered on 12/31/2013 3:54:55 PM by AK Hiker from AK
    • Answer inner collar but doesn't store hood. collar does keep wind and rain out.
      hood is attached not removable.
Answered on 12/31/2013 6:37:22 PM by rrvol from ohio
    • Answer The hood rolls up and Velcro's into place with the back tab that adjusts the hood while it is up. I like it this way because the rain doesn't get a chance to come into the jacket at the neck. I like it!!!!

  • Question “How will this jacket hold up in the wind?”
Asked on 12/3/2013 11:14:40 AM by lose the 'tude from PCT
    • Answer This jacket is waterproof, but not windproof. It should have some wind protection, but it is not designed with that in mind. You will probably want to layer as it is not insulated.
Answered on 12/3/2013 11:43:15 AM by Product Specialist Greg from Sierra Trading Post
    • Answer Perfectly! I wear it all the time as a windproof layer, even when it isn't raining. (I live in a windy, stormy part of the country.) This jacket design no longer has the cinch cord on the front of the hood to snug it around the face (older models did, and I used that feature). Might want a stocking-style hat under the hood in cold, windy conditions to keep the ears warm...But you can use the velcro tab on the back of the hood to "shorten" it. I love this jacket, and do recommend it!
