A process of fabric finishing used to increase the strength of cotton and affinity to dyes. It results in a soft, lustrous fabric with a slight sheen. This expensive process is done by immersing the fabric in sodium hydroxide and then neutralizing it in acid, causing the fiber to swell permanently. The process was discovered by John Mercer around 1840.
