I run in fivefingers and was looking for a shoe with a thicker sole that would provide more comfort on pavement and on things like gravel and rocks. I also wanted something that would be warmer for the cooler weather that is coming. These shoes lace up nice and tight, but seem to be made for a foot more bulky than mine. I have a narrow heel and there is space around my heel when the shoes are cinched tight, even backlacing into the top eyelet. They also seem to rub on the side of my big toe; I generally wear shoes with a wider toe box that lets my toes spread out. I need the shoes with zero drop due to neuromas in my foot, and these fit the bill in that regard and do not aggravate the neuromas whereas all "regular" running shoes do. I wear a 7 1/2 in regular shoes and usually buy an 8 1/2 in running shoes. However, I was able to try on a pair of the Merrell's on vacation and the 8 1/2 as way too big, so I ordered an 8. The size seems right, just the shape of the shoe not quite right for me. I have only worn them for 2 days, one of which was in a 5K road race, so perhaps they need more "breaking in."
