“I cannot believe it! I was afraid I wasn’t going to survive the day… the people who said these shoes need little or no breaking-in were right! I have an extremely difficult time finding shoes that fit my boney, high-arched foot - particularly because it seems unusual for a 5'8" female to have a size 6 - 7 shoe size along with a medium frame (and that additional weight we seem to "find" once we hit 40). I wore these shoes on a hike to the top of the North Chalone Peak (3304' - Pinnacles National Monument), and had only worn them approximately 3 times on the treadmill prior to the hike - nowhere near what I would consider a "break-in period". These shoes are incredibly comfortable, durable, and lightweight. The cord allows for a more custom-fit, so they should work well for many width requirements - due to the sliding mechanism on the cords, it was easy to quickly adjust them for fit along the way. If I had to gripe about these shoes (and the only reason I am, is because this is a review), it would be that the cord is long when you pull it snug, and they’re kinda hard to pull on. The bright side of this is, the cord can easily be tucked under the lacing without any discomfort - it just might not be the prettiest look for those who are wearing them with style in mind (though I must admit the funky style is kinda cool, regardless). Also, the loop at the heel to pull the shoe on is fully functional and works great. The glove-like, stretchy ankle stays put and keeps out dirt, bugs, stickers, or any other "intruders" you might encounter. There is no slipping and sliding, whatsoever, in these shoes. The toe-bed was great for the descent down the mountain, and the shoe is very cushy inside. I normally wear a 6.5, but I went with a size 7 and coupled the shoes with the ‘Bridgedale Light Hiker Socks – CoolMax® for Women’ – what a perfect fit! I stepped in mud, walked on rocks, gravel, and dirt, and these shoes didn't fail me once! I got one tiny blister on my big toe, but so not worth mentioning - I highly recommend these shoes! (So much so, I plan to buy at least one more pair for the less dirt-laden, everyday adventures!) You can’t beat the price of these incredible shoes! Thanks, Sierra Trading Post, and Merrell! You saved the day! :o)”
