Too wide and clunky for off trail hiking. I would require a narrower fit, or boots that can you cinche up tightly.

Merrell makes great comfortable light hiking boots. I purchased the Legacy that's a bit sturdier for added support and protection on a rocky high alltitude trip. They saved my feet and ankles. The fit is comfortable even without break-in.

My experience with Merrell has been that they are a very comfortable shoe but the construction is poor. I have owned several pairs and none required "break in" but all did not last considering what I paid. These boots are comfortable but were tight and had to be returned. I would not trust a merrel if I were leaving the country.

Unlike the other several Merrell boots I've bought, these actually fit about 1/2 size larger than advertised. Perfect with a nice gel insole and medium to heavy socks, which are somewhat warmer but tolerable. A bit heavier than I anticipated, but enormous grip! Overall, another great Merrell product.

I recently completed a 7 mile and a 10 mile hike with these boots with not break in time. Both hikes were over steep and harsh ground. The boots were great.
