I've heard a lot of complaints about the rand causing problems with the achilles area, causing a blister on the heal. I also had this problem on my first run, which is something that Merrell needs to address, however; I did find a simple solution, and have been running in these barefoot ever since with no issues. The shoe has a type of slingshot rand which is easily modified by cutting the piping around the top of the heal down to the black part. this is only a 1/4" cut, and because of the design does not cause any issues with the function of the shoe, and the cut does not travel or fray because of the construction. I did this, and ran in these on rough trails all year last year with no socks, and no problems. I'm buying another pair, and doing the same thing. After this simple modification, these have been the best shoe I've ever run in.

after 30 yrs. of running trails, I've finally found my favorite shoe. the whole barefoot thing made me skeptical at first, but now, I'm a convert. these shoes are light, comfortable, and wear amazingly well. my only issue with them was the top of the back rand, which the first time out, gave me a little hot spot, (no socks), but after I took a razor and cut the rand down to the black slingshot rand fabric (only 1/4" cut), I've never had that problem again, and it didn't compromise the fit or integrity of the shoe whatsoever. I've abused these shoes on some of the toughest trails in the catskill mtns., running on sharp rocks and wet terrain. everyone's feet are diff., but these fit, and you like the barefoot style, you can't go wrong here.

These shoes need to be worn with socks. The heel pulls in with each step causing a blister. Either get a good stick on blister pad or wear really thick socks. Otherwise good shoes.

Fantastic running shoe without all the bulk. Gives you that grip to the road like a nice set of high performance tires. The deals here are great. Got these babies for half price after applying the coupon I was emailed I love them so much I ordered a second pair after just one test run.

Whether your trying out barefoot for the first time or a seasoned veteran, this shoe stands out as Merrell's finest barefoot offering. True-to-size, this shoe exemplifies durability, form, and function. With it's soft-shell upper, the Sonics stand up to cooler, wet weather, making them an excellent choice for all seasons. I use them for indoor training, road running, and with the trail glove sole, they make a great hiking or trail running shoe. Excellent. It's no wonder why they replaced Merrell's GTX Embark as their premier barefoot shoe.

great shoes. waterproof! and mud just rinses right off. Toe box is big and roomy to wiggle toes up and down while the heel grips and holds the foot. Great shoes for PF problems.

Bought two pair. Used one pair the other I returned unused; the pair I used I guess I simply got stung on so I'll eat the costs since I did run a few miles in them. Buyer beware, these shoes, the left one only, caused in just a few miles a nasty blister on my left heal just below the achilles tendon. On examination I could feel the manfacturers defect that almost seems designed to cripple the runner. The unused pair that I returned had the same defect. Whether this defect is just in the men's size 9M I do not know but on digging into others who have reviewed this shoe blisters are a common refrain.

Left shoe inside where achilles tendon meets ankle there is a lump that causes a severely disabling blister. You don't notice it at first then boom you're down and out with a nasty blister in just the wrong place that takes a long time to heal. Though I only wore one pair I returned the other pair that has the same defect. size 9m men

I was really excited about these, and really wanted to love them but like Merrell's I've tried in the past they rub my achilles tendon raw. I don't know if its just the shape of my foot or what but I can't wear them for more than 30 minutes before a hot spot forms.
