Aethetically these shoes are unique. The laces extend close to toes, so a custom fit is achievable. Fit is great from the get go. They won't keep your feet dry in a heavy rain storm, but the large rubber rand is good for keeping most moisture out. I've had my pair for nearly a year and the only complaint I have is that in one area the glue has failed attaching the sole and if it's really wet, there's a minor squeak as water is forced out while walking. This is minor. Overall these shoes have warn well, fit great, and fit better than other Montrail models I've owned.

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
There are two things I think about when I consider the value of an 'approach shoe.' First, is the shoe good for getting me from the car to the climb? Second, can it get me up an easy climb without requiring me to switch to real climbing shoes. The Montrail Flow excels at part 1 above. It is a super comfortable and effective hiking shoe. Lightweight, well designed to protect the feet on the trail. Good support. Good shock absorption. As for part 2, as an actual climbing shoe, the Flow does not get the highest marks. Not bad at all, but not great. The toe area is too wide to allow for effective edging. And what Montrail calls sticky rubber (for smearing) is not as sticky as some rubber compounds from competitive products. Still, an excellent shoe.
