most comfy shoes for long hard hikes. one issue: in the rocky terrain I hike/trail run on, the tread wears out quickly. Otherwise, hands down, the most confy trail runners I have ever had. Owned 3 pairs before I could not find my size again.....

I use these shoes mainly for walking and hiking. They are lightweight which is nice for day hikes, but not great for water - the only downside I see, and for that I would want a real hiking boot anyway.

this Montrail Hardrock (2007) were great. I used them for a year for hiking, asphalt running, trail running in tropical weather and also during the fall. They were the most comfortable shoes I ever had. My feet are narrow with high arch so the cushioning of these shoes was perfect for me.
I am sorry that the new Montrail are not as good as they used to be.

These shoes are the best motion control running shoes for people like me, who have alot of feet problems. These shoes are the only reason I can still run 6 to 10 miles usually 5 times a week. The only part of the shoe that wears down is the inside ankle part..then its time for a new pair cause my feet start rolling in again. But thats alot of miles...so I get my moneys worth

I planned to use the shoe for light trail walking (dirt/gravel/partially paved) four to five times per week, but it has turned out to be one of the most painful athletic shoes I have owned in recent memory. The sizing in terms of length and overall fit seemed to be good for both feet, although there is some pressure on top of the big toe of the right foot when I walk. My biggest complaint is that I experience a lot of strain and pain in the inner arches and up the inner ankles every time I walk in these shoes. After wearing the shoes a few dozen times, hoping to break them in, there is no change. This shoe just does something serious to my feet that I can't figure out. I have a heavy footfall, but I do not tend to over or under pronate. The cushioning seems to be adequate, the shoes lace up securely, and they seem to be a pretty rugged. They are showing virtually no signs of wear in the upper. But after an excruciating 2.5-mile walk today, I have decided to give these shoes away. Don't hang on to these shoes as long as I did with pain - if they hurt at first, return them right away!!!

I used this shoe to train for the Imogene Pass Trail Race in CO last year and it worked out pretty well for me--I never had knee/foot pain during my training or the race (lots of ups and downs on uneven trails). I have also used the shoe to do class 3/4 scrambling in the mountains and it gripped the rock quite well.
The shoelaces are not the best, as they often come untied, and the bottom of the shoe wore out medium-quickly (quicker than I thought the bottom of a trail shoe should); however, it did last through a hard summer of training and a winter of lighter jogging.
