These shoes are fairly comfortable...for a couple of miles. They do have a very narrow profile, but they don't seem to fit as narrow as they look. However, the narrow profile can lead to rolling ankles if you're careless about foot placement. The midsole is firm enough that the soles fo my feet begin to hurt after anything more than 3 miles, even on relatively soft, smooth trails. If you're looking for a shoe for short trail runs and races up to 5K, you might be in luck. If you regularly run longer, look elsewhere.

Overall, the shoe is great: fit, comfort, stability, breathability, and of course, price. Nonetheless, the 'cleats' on the bottom wear really fast, and this is what makes it average, at best. Granted, I wore my pair quite frequently and I walk most everywhere, so your milage may vary. I'd imagine the shoe would be great for off-road running as the traction is pretty good, but it may be a bit too soft for some.

This is my first pair of Montrails. I was impressed the moment i put them on. I am a road runner adding trail runs to my mix, and these felt great. They feel narrow, (and I have very narrow feet)there was some rubbing on the pinky toe the first time out. I suppose they were stiff, but doing 5 miles the first run on shoes is not a good idea. This is a great deal for trail running shoes. The soles will get clogged on mud! They also have a bright orange side that prevents them from being street shoes, unless you want to look weird

This is the best trail shoe I've had for over 10 years. Why is it so hard for shoe companies to figure out that a narrow tread is what is needed for serious off-road running? This shoe has it, which translates into easy foot placement in even the rockiest terrain. The tread itself is very aggressive, with raised rubber cleat-type studs instead of silly grooves, meaning sure-footed holding power, especially coming downhill. Best of all, this shoe conformed perfectly to my foot from the get-go, with lots of extra fill around the opening so dirt doesn't get in so much. Finally, the lacing is well thought out, with lots of options for different patterns, and laces that stay tied. I bought a second pair the day after my first run in these. Maybe I should buy a third...
