I was very excited about this jacket as it seemed to check a lot of my boxes. The size did run a little larger than usual but I liked that for layering purposes. Loved the coloring. Unfortunately, it was just too puffy for my liking. I felt like I didn't maintain much shape. I know this isn't of utmost importance while trying to stay warm but I was surprised how full it was! Also, unless you zipped it up the entire way, the neck part felt weird. Hard to explain except for the fact that I felt I couldn't keep my head level without being poked in the chin by the top of the zipper line. Uncomfortable for me.

I ended up sending this one back. It wasn't a match. It did, however, feel like it would have kept me very warm and that's a plus in New England!

This is what is termed a "belay jacket," an insulator to put on over everything when you stop after sweating from exertion.

Here, the insualting purpose was foiled by sleeves that are shorter than is typical of Mountain Hardwear and they do not have an inner cuff. You have to tighten the cuffs with the velcro tabs. The cut also does not help, it is very large through the middle, and a bit tight in the shoulders, very different from the typical Mountain Hardwear cut.

I found a much better belay jacket in the Outdoor Research Chaos. The Chaos does not have as much insulation, but the technical features and cut are superior to the B'Lady. In addition the insulation in the Chaos is Primaloft, whereas this insulation seemed heavy for what you get.

For those of you familiar with Mountain Hardwear, you know sleeves run quite long in this brand; NOT IN THIS JACKET. The sleeves are "typical" length, which is OK if you do not have long arms.

Also, this brand tends to have an athetic cut: trim through the body and big in the shoulders; NOT THIS JACKET. The shoulders are kind of tight and the body part is HUGE. It is called a belay jacket, so if that is your application, it affords plenty of room for your harness (as well as big hips and a big belly!)

This jacket fits like a Marmot or Patagonia jacket.

The other functional issue with this jacket is the sleeves have no stetch cuff to block the wind, only a velcro flap to cinch the sleeves tight. I find when wearing gloves that those velcro closures are difficult to maneuver, and if this is designed for climbing, you don't want to fool around with your cuffs while setting up a belay. Almost every other winter jacket has a wind cuff, so I was surprised this one does not.

The Black color is OK but you won't get any dates wearing this jacket. Strictly for function. The insulation seems good. I may see if the men's version fits me since I am desperate for a synthetic hooded jacket that has a reasonable amount of insulation; most today are only 60-100g insulation. The insulation seems a little heavier than the old Compressor jackets.
