As noted on an earlier review, the Drifter 3 and Drifter 3 DP are similar but substantially different tents. I was hoping to get the DP version & that is what arrived. STP was unable to confirm which model would ship. It seems the now included description photos indicate DP is what ships with several references to the DP model...just the product page header is not clear. It does in fact include the ground cloth and loft. This is my 4th 3 person tent and by far the best. I was primarily looking for a full rain fly and not much over 6 lbs weight with all normal components. With all provided you would want to take, (3 stuff sacks, ground cloth, loft, etc.) the total weight is actually 6lbs 7.6oz. My current Sierra Designs Sirius 3 tent is just under 6 lbs with similar full components but a partial rain fly that often has condensation issues here in the NW. A minimum weight with exactly only 6 stakes, the actually included ground cloth, poles and rain fly, the total is 3lbs. 12.9oz. A minimum weight for the entire tent including exactly only 4 stakes, tent body, poles and rain fly is 5lbs. 6.7oz. If you are not inclined to use the ground cloth as such, it is a real nice size tarp for a dry outside area for cooking under and weighs 10.6oz. At the narrowest points, it measures 89" x 60" (91" x 63 at the corners). To date, I have only set it up in my living room but am very impressed with attention to detail. Setting up the ground cloth, poles & rain fly first and then inserting the tent (the DP feature) works very nicely and could prove very useful in a rain storm. At the just under $150 with extra 35% off I got, it was clearly the best value anywhere in a 3 person tent. And, yes, the Mountain Hardware website has the accurate description of what it seems you will get. I too use it as a generous 2 person tent but I would be more inclined to use this as a 3 person than all my other ones. Something that caught me by surprise is just how large the 2 doors really are...an important feature to allow reasonable access to clip points to install the tent body last under the fly & poles. What are you waiting for....buy it!

I ordered this item and received a Drifter 3 DP (DryPitch) tent which is the newer version Gear loft and footprint were INCLUDED. You can find full specs on the Mountain Hardwear site. The DP fly is all green, not two colors as illustrated. DP model is 4 oz heavier (Min weight 5 lbs 7 oz). The two poles are permanently joined by a plastic hub and does not connect with a large clip as illustrated. Have only set it up indoors so can not comment on how it performs yet. Not saying yours will be a DP model, STP has not been as great about their website as they used to be. Has similar issues with another tent I ordered from them and returned since it was not as illustrated. I like this one and will keep it.

I've had this tent out roughly 30 times, in a variety of weather, and think I can offer a pretty fair assessment of its function.

First, the stated weight on the specs listed here is a shade over 5lbs. That's for the minimum trail weight which doesn't include the (poor to average) stakes and stuff sack. It will carry a bit heavier.

While not the lightest 3P tent out there I think the Drifter would be an excellent choice for the backpacking couple who want a little extra room and don't shy away from shoulder season camping.

The relatively vertical walls provide for a ton of headroom, the two vestibules are more than big enough to stow all gear and with a usable 93" of length, taller hikers won't need to worry about hitting walls with their feet. Another great touch is the included gear loft which really comes in handy as well as the reflective points on the tent and guy lines.

The pitch is super quick and intuitive and while initially I anticipated some trouble with the poles, they've shown themselves to be strong. A quick fix section of pole comes included in an emergency.

But what really stands out to me is how it performs in weather. I've had it in driving rain and sustained winds and it's been rock solid. I did get a little nervous when the winds were hitting around 40 MPH one night but, outside of some shaking, the tent held strong given the well positioned guy lines.I have noticed a bit of condensation during nights below freezing and in snow but nothing that wasn't expected. Overall the ventilation is good. You can also set it up without the tent body to shave weight on warm nights as well as set it up fly first in the rain to keep the tent body dry. A nice option.

Personally, I'd save the money and not purchase a separate footprint as the 70D floor should be more than strong enough for most site situations.

So for a freestanding tent with this much function at the price point offered on STP, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend pulling the trigger. MH makes some good, durable, reliable equipment and I'd say the Drifter 3 is a great example of that.

I was waiting on giving this item a rating until I finally got to use it. I took it down to the park during this past Easter weekend and it was a joy to use. It was very easy to set-up and only took me about a minute and a half to set-up. The stitches and craftsmanship is top notch. Although it was cold and windy outside, the inside of the tent remained a very pleasant temperature. It provided shade and cover from the wind.

Since it was such a success at the park, I thought I'd take it to the beach. Sadly I forgot to bring the stakes with me and the wind was blowing pretty hard. Naturally the tent was a little harder to set-up but it still held up fine. I would not hesitate to purchase again.
