Reviewed by Anon from NYC on Tuesday, March 19, 2013Dry.Q Elite is supposed to be like an improved form of Event fabric, which is already known for being more breathable than Gore-Tex. I can't say I conducted a scientific study, but it seems to work well in respect so far to me. And despite apparently having some slight air permanability which increases breathability (especially when you need it most--i.e., when it is humid/raining out, as it doesn't require large humidity differentials like Gore-Tex) , it is windproof. And it has the full range of pit zips, two-way front zip, chest pockets, etc. for more ventilation (by the way the chest pockets are small, but the side pockets sit fairly high and zip from the top so are accessible with a pack belt on). It is fairly light (but def not ultralight) and packs down smaller than I would have expected, as the shell fabric is a medium-light denier. I was concerned about durability, but so far with a weekend size pack on, brushing against tree branches, etc. there are no issues so far (we'll see though). But then again I was hesitant to carry a bunch of heavy logs resting on my forearms with my expensive new 40D shell. The stretchy side and back softshell panels do seem to help freedom of movement when hiking with poles, reaching out, etc. but not mind blowingly so...probably not worth the cost I'm sure that complicated construction feature added (but this is STP where everything is on sale). I bet this would be nice snowboarding. Compared to the Dry.Q. Elite Beacon which I also ordered, the fabric is much thinner. Beacon is probably a lot more durable but will give up breathability and feels stiff (and arms were short on me but I'm on the lanky side). Victorio was nice but didn't like the available color, liked the Drystein pockets and the Drystein II fit me better (i think Victorio was a little snugger in the shoulders/chest if I recall). I ordered a L in each (6'2", 42L, 33 waist).

Tested in Killington VT on Dec 30. The most brutal, freezing, windy, weather I've experienced. On lift - no wind penetration, ski down - no sweat. Feels like watching your own movie. Before I use MH Krammer Gore Tex. Dry Q Ellite is so much better. All details in that jacket are design for comfort and function: stretch zones, pockets, unbelievable low weight, soft, nice in touch fabric, no snow apron but on East who need it anyway, except additional weight and bulk. All guys in upper weight limit may notice surprising bonus after all - perfect Drystein design makes you looks so much thinner. My friends joked that I diet before ski to looks so good. No I didn't, that jacket makes illusion, but it's time to shred 20 anyway. To stay warm I used mid-weight base layer merino wool 260 with Lycra from Icebreaker, and Ghost Whisperer down jacket from MH.
