Super STP price with nice features such as functional hood, great interior pockets, and reaaly like the butter jersy thumb holes on the Sleeves
Reviewed by Chiapet from San Diego on Sunday, March 15, 2015I'm just finishing up a March trip in Alaska. This wonderful jacket kept me warm while dog mushing at -10 degrees. I stood outside watching the northern lights for 3 hours in -20 degrees and was comfortable. This is miraculous since I'm from San Diego. Usually I start shivering when the temps drop into the 50's. I did look like a pink puffball wearing this jacket but I was so comfy I didn't care. Got the large and found it true to size. There was plenty of room for a couple of layers under it. The hood doesn't seal well around the face so you still need some kind of muffler to wear with it in really cold temps. Now I'm trying to find the men's version for my boyfriend.
Reviewed by Mill Valley Mum from CA on Sunday, January 25, 2015I wanted this jacket to be awesome, but it looked so funny on me. My 12 year old son actually started laughing. I'm not small, so when you add 5 inches of girth everywhere, especially in the bust, it's kind of comical. Dolly Parton meets the Michelin woman is how we decided it looked.
GREAT FEATURES: This jacket is super toasty, beyond lightweight, and long enough to cover the derierre perfectly. The sizing is compatible with other larges in outdoor jackets (I disagree with other comments that MTN HWare people make small clothes).
The butter sleeve cuffs are amazing. The arms are just right - could raise my arms overhead and not have the hand warmer sleeves pull tight at all.
In order to make the jacket wind and waterproof-ish, the outer fabric is quite stiff. It makes a loud swish swish sound with every arm swing. I could hear myself coming from a block away.
Zipper is annoying. The zip element is very small and only has a tiny plastic cover over the zipper (that you zip with) making it hard to grab and connect with the other side. Because of the extreme loft of the down, you have to kind of compress the jacket a bit to get the two sides to connect. And it's not a two way zip, which is a minus for me.
The hood is big and stiff. It bugged me when I tried the jacket on sitting down. The hood is huge and kind of sits there behind your neck when it's down. I kept seeing it in my peripheral vision and hearing it brush behind me. So, if you have a short-ish neck, then the hood might be in your way too.
The arms were huge on me (circumference-wise), making my arms look like thighs. I guess that's better than them being tight.
If you don't care about looking 40 lbs heavier than usual, hearing yourself swish when you walk and having a bulky hood and an annoying zipper, then this jacket is the lightest, warmest, yummiest thing money can buy.
I'm going to try the ghost whisperer or nitrous Q shield.
Verified Buyer Reviewed by Anna the Dog Musher from Alaska on Tuesday, December 9, 2014This is a great jacket. The baffles in the main body of the jacket are a real bonus and help keep the heat in at subzero temperatures. I am a women's size 12, 5'3" and I got the XL to provide me with plenty of room for layering underneath and to ensure the coat came down far enough to cover my hips. I primarily use the coat under a windproof shell for dog mushing in temps ranging from 0F to -40F. The windproof shell is important because there aren't any baffles on the arms, which allows for wind to penetrate through the jacket on the arms. This is the main reason the jacket did not get 5 stars. With a windproof shell over the top, I have been very happy with this jacket.
Reviewed by Wyo runner from Wyoming on Monday, November 17, 2014Whether you are looking for an aggressive, backcountry winter jacket or something around town, you can't go wrong with the Nilas! Last Christmas I got a men's Nilas and I loved it so very much. After losing 60 pounds, that jacket is far too big (no less warm though!). I was looking for something women specific since now I can fit into women's jackets, and I bought a coat from a competitor that was supposedly "technical". At 25 degrees I had cold spots! An Internet search later and I discovered that MHW made the Nilas in a women specific cut - but that it is now discontinued. I went to Sierra ad found out they had it - and a great deal on it to boot (as usual, my men's Nilas came from Sierra too), so I snatched it up! The pink is super cute and girly and the cut/fit is very feminine, despite the fact that it is a super lofty down coat! You just won't find a warmer coat! I have worn this thing in -10, no activity, and was toasty warm with just a tshirt underneath! I also got to try it out in 5 degree weather with 35mph gusts, and the Air Shield technology worked flawlessly - besides the wind rocking me back and forth I didn't feel a thing!! This jacket is so light it's like wearing nothing at all - it is so fluffy but not bulky. The hood is great - nice tall fleece lined collar that is easy to bury your face in when it's really chilly! I firmly believe this is the best coat you can buy - and it's ability to pack small and light appeals to my backpacking heart. If you live in a cold climate and need an amazingly comfortable, warm jacket, you won't regret this purchase. My husband is so happy to be able to inherit my other Nilas - and he agrees, it's really an amazing coat. You won't find a better deal than at Sierra, either!!
