I have been looking long and hard for a high-quality waterproof for a trip to the Himalayas that would fit over a big down jacket. I finally found it in this jacket. After a lot of sizing issues, the XL worked. I usually wear a medium in Mountain Hardware and I first sized up to large to make room for the down jacket but it was too tight in the chest and shoulders (I must admit that I have big shoulders from rowing). The XL works perfectly on my shoulders and the arms are not too long which I worried about. It is a bit bigger than I'd like in the waist, but I can cinch it. I didn't think I wanted a soft shell, but this jacket is only lightly insulated and not much more weight than a non insulated shell, and I think it will be perfect for my trip. So, why am I not giving it five stars? Because this jacket would be ALMOST perfect for backcountry skiing or snowshoeing as well but it lacks a snow skirt. When I ski backcountry powder I MUST have a snow skirt, so I'm downgrading this jacket to 4 stars because it's not as versatile as I would want it to be.

I originally ordered a size M, which is the size of all of my other Mountain Hardware jackets, tops and pants (I own over 10 pieces of Mountain Hardware clothing), and I'm 5'7", 140#. Unfortunately the medium was too tight, so I exchanged for the large, and that was way too big. So I returned the jacket. The jacket does look nice on, has a streamline cut, and it fits high under the arms to prevent bulk. The zippers are waterproofed, and the neon yellow is a nice contrast detail on the black. The biggest con, other than the fit, are the draw cord ends on the jacket hood, which poke out like curb feelers at the neck. The adjustment toggle for the cords is concealed in between two layers of fabric on the hood, making it hard to adjust, and I did try to pull the cord ends inside the hood, but they wouldn't stay. I really wanted to love this jacket, but it was not right for me.
