When reading reviews about this being to light to be a winter coat I have to smile. This coat is warm and great for everyday use but it is designed for active hikers climbers and skiers it can be used alone or in a layering system with something like the monkey man or in extreme weather a softshell. These coats are light enough to carry in a backpack (14oz) and are a little oversized for layering. I run hot when hiking in the mountains of Washington state and have hiked in -0 degree weather. In extreme weather I carry a 3 layer system- the Monkeyman- a Zonal Jacket-and a waterproof softshell. I may wear one or all three or none of them. It is a great way to keep warm as a stand alone coat or a super warm layer for a person standing still! This is also a beautiful coat and yes a great looking going out on the town city coat for those cold frosty nights but that's not what it was designed for! So don't expect it to be your only go to winter coat!

Love the fit and feel of this jacket. The color was a bit bright for me (blue), so I'll be looking for a less bright one in my size.

Really love the fit of this insulated jacket, but it seems way overpriced for the warmth you get. Not even close to the warmth of a down jacket, but I figured that before I bought it. It has a semi-fitted form and works great under a shell or alone on a 40s-50s kind of day.

I like the synthetic insulation as an alternative to thin down when you have to wash it. The stretch panels on the side make for a more athletic fit and better heat mapping.

This jacket looks good in the pictures but when I got it is is basically like those old nylon, quilted, insulated long underwear I wore duck hunting in the sixties. It was OK then because that's all we had but not so much now. I'm returning it.

About Mountain Hardwear

Starting back in 1993, a small group of outdoor industry mavericks broke away from the pack to follow a less-traveled path. From the very beginning, the primary goal of Mountain Hardwear was to create an outdoor gear brand with a sharp focus on technology-driven design, superior performance and hardcore reliability. The result of this function-first mentality has been an array of incredible Mountain Hardwear jackets, clothing, tents, backpacks, sleeping bags and accessories. Today, after more than two decades of industry-leading innovation, Mountain Hardwear continues to set new benchmarks for dependability in the toughest conditions on the planet.
